Programs,
Projects and
Progress
A report on the year 2000,
Deerfield Library’s Year of
Renewal
During our millennium year we strived to
become a focus in our community, where ren
ovation was the word for the whole Village.
We were involved with bricks and mortar,
computers, landscaping and elevators and still
managed to add over 10,000 books, videos,
audio cassettes and... new this year DVD’s
and books on CD... and to serve all your
information needs.
Our Community where hundreds took passports
behind the scenes to view each department;
music, beanie baby prizes and food were pop
ular! The Bristol Renaissance Faire visited us
in May, taking us back to the 16th century as
Queen Elizabeth Tudor knighted the children,
townspeople picnicked on the lawn and music
and dancing provided a leisurely contrast to
our 21st century.
Programs
We held 61 adult programs, including several
co-partnered with the Deerfield Fine Arts
Commission, Deerfield Area Historical Society,
U.S. Foreign Policy Association and North
Suburban Library System. We offered income
tax assistance, flu shots, voter registration,
free July 4 lemonade, Ravinia passes, the 4th
annual Rosemary Sazonoff Creative Writing
Contest, 15 classes on using the Internet and
monthly Librarian in the Lobby, our “in person
suggestion box”.
We served Deerfield schools and students
with our annual Student Government Day,
where we learn along with our teens, and with
library instruction for junior high students.
Youth Services Reading Roundup has been a
rousing success for 2-8th graders, and
Exploring Art Through Literature workshops
are the talk of the town. Crafts and storytime
are popular Family Fun Night activities.
Library visitors from the Chinese Academy of
Sciences said, “If only we had something like
this for our children in China!”
Other projects finalized this year are lobby
and entrance remodeling to meet ADA stan
dards, rebuilding of an elevator, and rebuilding of the west garden (Youth Services area),
Cell phone use was banned to make the library
more peaceful
Progress
Plans for the future include a revamp of the
AV room to become more accessible and
attractive: new lights and proper shelving for
books on tape, videos and DVD’s
Jeff Blumenthal was appointed to the
library board to replace Yvonne Sharpe in
2000. Bill Seiden also served in 2000 as presi
dent of the North Suburban Library System. In
2001 Bill Seiden and John Anderson will leave
their Deerfield Library board positions and a
2001 spring board election will bring changes
to the makekup of the library board. We were
saddened at the death this year of Tony
Sabato who retired from the library board in
1997 after 19 years of service.
During 2000, Glenn Poch was selected Head
of Technical Service and spearheaded new
computer installation. Better equipment and
response time has brought us up to speed for
the 21st century and we shall continue to
enhance our collection, and provide valuable
service to our community.
Projects
Readers of all ages pledged to read 100
books in 2000 in our Century Readers Club. By
December, 5000 books were read and a

Librarian's DOSli (contined from page 1)
was the fisherman who could call up wild fish
that lived by the end of his dock, the root beer
bottler whose homemade soda “you opened
outside and caught it in a pail across the yard,"
there was the cheesemaker with the long raft
of floating oil drums that featured rocking
chairs for the fishermen, the car mechanic who
did dentistry. I don’t think he felt sorry for them,
though a lot of other people did, and I don’t
think he loved them all like we did the stray
cats. I do know he thought they were “color
ful" to use his own word.
What those friends came down to was
simple. Acceptance. Don't judge anyone by
what you see on the outside, friends are
friends, who you know are your friends, you
stick up for your friends whoever they are, and
friends don't judge friends. Also, rural Minne
sota did not give you many choices, though
among his group there was an All-American
basketball player, a WWII Marine Corps fighter
Ace, the best pheasant hunter in Washington
County, a sheriff, a priest, a guy covered com
pletely with naval tattoos and a Carnegie LifeSaving Gold Medal winner. They were differ
ent but never boring.
I chose my friends a lot differently, and I
have a far less interesting group to talk to than
my Dad did. I am afraid that this is endemic to
suburban life. Everyone I know is responsible,
has all his body parts, works for a living, has
college degrees, speaks perfect English in
complete sentences, and has straight teeth.
Having been back to Minnesota nine times in
the last two years has really made me wonder
who Garrison Keillor talks about when he de
scribes Minnesota, because I don't meet the
old-time characters there anymore than I do
here. However, it is a serious mistake to think
everyone is “just like us."
The book I am recommending this month
is In Confidence by Anatoly Dobrynin. As So
viet Foreign Minister he was a participant in
most of the Cold War's great confrontations.
Dobrynin knew all the international players
from Khrushchev to Reagan and sheds a clear
light on all the events that shaped our time.
The Bay of Pigs, Vietnam and Star Wars are
all illuminated by a distinctly different perspec
tive than we ever got from our newspapers or
television Duped by his own government
about the missiles in Cuba, cajoled by LBJ to
end the Vietnam war in 1965, Dobrynin was
at the center of crucial world events for over
thirty years and he has a lot to say about all of
it. I think we can learn a lot from these former
Cold Warriors that they learned the hard, hard
way, and that we should never forget.

There are still a few patrons who ask,
“Where’s the fiction?” Others have already
discovered the newly restructured space on
the lower level of the library and the large
new elevator that provides direct access to
the 3,600 square foot room.
The fiction room now houses the en
tire fiction collection of 23,331 volumes
including all large print, mysteries, science
fiction and an expanded paperback collec
tion. The room meets the architect, staff,
library board and publics expectations of
being a quiet, restful, dignified, informal
area with excellent lighting. The room was
dedicated to Thomas E. Parfitt on Sunday,
September 17. Mr. Parfitt, Library Board
President for 20 years, gave his thanks and
appreciation to the large audience.
Bridget Lamont, Director of the Illlinois
State Library was an honored guest at the
dedication. Ms. Lamont commended the
unique use of existing space provided at no
extra cost to taxpayers. She also praised the
fact that a longtime library trustee was so
honored.
We thank Deerfield Bakery, Swansons
Blossom Shop, Bob Close, Hel’s Kitchen
and the Deerfield Garden Club for their
contributions to our successful event.

Fall 1993 saw the installation of the library’s
handicapped accessible front doors and the
addition of an outside video drop for pa
tron convenience.
Now a major priority for the library
board is efficient renovation of main floor
space which formerly housed the fiction
collection. It is possible that the fireplace
and current periodicals will be moved to
the former fiction area providing a pleas
ant reading space in a more peaceful lo
cation. This would increase shelf space
for the nonfiction collection and busi
ness room.
The Deerfield Public Library has received

BROWSING
at the DEERFIELD
PUBLIC LIBRARY
920 Waukegan Rd.
Deerfield. IL 60015
Winter 1989
Vol. 4. No. 1
Welcome!
New Head Of Reference
I would like to take this opportunity, my
first column as library director, to give a
heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of people
who took time to speak, call, or write to
congratulate me on my promotion. After
so many years of public service in what I
thought was anonymity, your response has
been overwhelming to me. It is so seldom
that librarians get the praise and recogni
tion you have extended. This promotion is
now more than just a promotion, rather
something very personal and rewarding to
me.
Thank you all, so very much, for your
kindness.
My goals for the next three years are re
latively simple ones: Collection develop
ment to more closely match your needs
|nd desires, staff training to insure a conrinued high level of service, and a program
of public relations to make sure all of you
are aware of all of our materials, prog
rams, and service.
We have engaged a nationally known
library planner to help us regain some of
the charm our library has lost with the ad
dition of all the new technology, mate
rials, and books. We are as concerned as
you are about our library’s future.

Tax Time

sociation of Retired Persons. No ap

Peggy McCabe at the Bibliofile Catalog
Bibliofile Catalog Has
Personal Touch
Deerfield now has additional computer
catalogs, the ‘‘Friendly Biblioftles
which personify technology; they are be
coming popular with users.
The library’s old card catalogs went on
line, on computer, two years ago. The old
card catalog files were gradually phased
out and removed from public service areas
in December, 1988. Deerfield Library
shares the online system, the Joint Compu
ter Program for Libraries (JCPL) with
Skokie, Morton Grove and Waukegan.
JCPL, headquartered at the Skokie Lib
rary, runs a GEAC Computer Corp. 8000
system.
Presently the three Bibliofile CD-ROM
catalog workstations are located in Refer
ence and Young People’s Departments.
Bibliofile contains the same author, title,
and subject information found in the lib
rary’s JCPL GEAC online catalog. Dub
bed “The Intelligent Catalog” it is faster,
smarter, easier to understand, prints off
line at no charge and can talk and offer
friendly instruction! Best of all, the Bibliofile, a “home grown product” is free
standing (no telephone lines) and if the lib
rary’s other computers linked to the JCPL
Skokie office are down, the Bibliofile still
works as a back-up!
Bibliofile operates on a CD-ROM drive
controlled by a hard disk which gives it a
higher level of access programming. It
does not have the Circulation capacity that
the other computers have; it gives a book’s
location, but not whether it is in the library
or on loan. It is programmed and derived
from our regular catalog database, how
ever.
The Bibliofile stand alone system does
clarify searching on online catalogs. Try
it, you'll like it!
Judith Hortin has been appointed Head
of Reference at Deerfield Public Library.
This position was formerly held by Jack
Hicks who is now library director.
With five years experience as head of
reference in public libraries in Manhattan,
Kansas and Joliet, Illinois, Judy returns to
her native Chicago. She has also worked in
special libraries in Manhattan and Chicago
and was in System Reference at Bur Oak
Library System. Before becoming a libra
rian, she was a teacher for the Chicago
Public Schools.
Now a Mt. Prospect resident, Judy said,
“I have always cared about public lib
raries and providing information. It’s hard
to fill Jack’s shoes as I have always re
spected his work. I am looking forward to
meeting and working with the Deerfield
community.”
Judy holds a BA in English from the
University of Wisconsin and a Masters in
Library Science from Rosary College. She
enjoys reading and, regarding other per
sonal information, tells us she is a direct
descendent of Benedict Arnold!

Credits Librarians
The Deerfield Library recently received
the book, “The Reverse Effect: How Vita
mins and Minerals Promote Health and
Cause Disease’’, a 1,200 page volume
written by Walter Heiby, who is probably
Deerfield’s most active library user.
In his book, Heiby credits the Deerfield
reference librarians with finding many of
the world-record number of references
(4821) that support the facts and theories
of his highly praised and controversial
book.
Heiby, who has published poems and a
philosophy book, considers himself a
generalist whose intellectual curiosity was
whetted by his parents. Currently, he conducts literature research seminars in nutri-^^
tion, medicine and dentistry at the Univer-^^
sity of Illinois under the auspices of the
Glencoe based Nutrition for Optimal
Health Assn.

Familiar Quotations
RO50
This annual calendar lists holidays, fes
tivals, anniversaries, special events, and
other important dates - worldwide.
It can provide answers to a wide variety
of questions: When does Daylight Saving
Time Begin and end ? What date was the
First lunar landing? When is the anniver
sary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster?
When does Chinese New Year Begin?
For anyone scheduling bulletin board
displays the calendar can provide ideas
ranging from Beethoven's birthday to the
“Say No to Drugs” Week. Trivia buffs
and party planners can pick any date in the
calendar and Find some excuse for celeb
rating, be it Johnny Appleseed Day or the
International Zucchini Festival.

‘ To be, or not to be: that is the question.
‘ 'No man is an island. . .
*»
"The pen is mightier than the sword.
Can you identify these three famous
quotations ? Not only will Bartlett’s Famil
iar Quotations tell you that they are from
William Shakespeare, John Donne, and
Edward Bulwer-Lytton, but it will also
give an exact source right down to act,
scene, and line whenever possible.
Students, writers, speakers - at some
point almost everyone has to track down
an elusive quotation, and Bartlett’s is a
good starting point for such a search. Even
if you recall only a few words of a famous
line, its handy keyword index lets you
identify a source and verify the exact
wording. The main part of the book is ar
ranged by author or source quoted.

Keep VCR Clean
The Deefield Library now owns approx
imately 1500 video tapes for home view
ing (at $1 each for three days). To assure
their best use, it is important to remember
to keep the VCR equipment free from dirt
and other materials which “eat” the tape
or rpnder the picture snowy, the music
muddy. The library’s Technical Services^^
department suggests preventative mea-^B
sures, such as frequent cleaning of video^^
heads (at the heart of the machine) to re
move harmful dirt from oxide particle
buildup. This will keep the library’s tapes
in good order for your viewing enjoyment.
