Take the Road Less Traveled
with a Special Summer Reading Program
Details on page 2
From the Director
Dearest gentle readers, did you miss me?
Some of our readers may recognize my
opening line from Lady Whistledown’s
writing that features prominently in the
Netflix series Bridgerton. I have used
these past winter months and rainy
spring months to catch up on shows like
Bridgerton. But, now, oh, the promise of
warm weather and sunshine is what is
getting me outside. Reading outside makes me outdoorsy!
This issue features all of our exciting activities around this year’s
Summer Reading Program theme, “Read Beyond the Beaten
Path.” Our amazing staff has developed creative and engaging
programs for all ages. A 2021 study found that students lost
between 17-34% of their learning from the previous year over
the summer. Our summer program encourages students to
keep reading! And, remember that listening to an audiobook is
also reading.
Our youngest patrons don’t get to have all the fun. Adults can
participate in our year long program, Read Around the World.
We have monthly reading challenges based on the world’s 24
time zones. Our Adult Services staff have created reading lists
that you can find on our website or at our service points.
I try to be outside as much as possible in the summer months.
This upcoming summer will be no exception. My family
has some vacations planned that include hiking, and even
camping! We will, of course, be reading beyond the beaten path.
Amy Falasz-Peterson, Library Director
Read Beyond the Beaten Path:

From the Director
By now, regular Browsing readers know I
grew up in a family of readers, my kids are
carrying on the tradition. After all, their
mother is a librarian...it’s required.
Last week, my daughter came home
from school with the Scholastic Book
Club catalog. She had circled something
on every page. After she was done, my
son took another colored pen and circled
just as many items. Now, I’m a librarian at a great library with a
robust collection! Why would I consider actually buying books?
I used this as an opportunity to find out why they want to own
books when I can check them out from the library.
My son loves all the Percy Jackson books, and my daughter loves
the series featuring “Front Desk.” They like that they have the
opportunity to take their time to read it and go back to re-read it.
They find comfort in the physical book themselves.
I was struck by that profound sentiment from my middle school-aged
children. And, I started to think about the idea of comfort. We are
entering winter in Chicagoland. Some years, it feels like the winter will
never end...gray days and bone-chilling cold. But, we have all found
ways to comfort ourselves. In my family, it’s with books. Winter is the
perfect time to hunker down and find comfort in the small things in
life. Happy reading!
Amy Falasz-Peterson, Library Director
Individually, they both replied that they like owning their own
books, especially if it’s a title that they particularly enjoyed.
The Wide World of Video at DPL
While the big world of video is always
in season, for many people, winter is a
time they ramp up their video viewing
and gaming. To help you prepare, we
want to make sure you know about
the rich collections (physical and
streaming) available for your winter
entertainment.
Video Games
Are you one of the 227 million in the
U.S. that play video games, solo and
with others? Per a 2021 report of the
Entertainment Software Association,
players say gaming inspires, provides
mental stimulation, and relieves stress.
Our library has a large collection of
games for Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series
X, Xbox One, Wii, and WiiU.
DPL staff is happy to help you discover
new games in our diverse collection.
Multimedia Librarian Ted Gray, who
oversees the video game collection,
loves the sports games like MLB The
Show, and FIFA. Also, the big open
world games like Skyrim, Fallout, and
Red Dead Redemption. Adult Services
Librarian Anne Jamieson recommends
Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Stardew
Valley, and Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.
For info on the newest additions to
the collection, visit deerfieldlibrary.

If you are the type that can’t get enough of
a specific genre or actor, be sure to look up
our Binge Box collection. Each Binge Box is
a themed collection of 4-6 DVDs, and only
counts as one checked-out item. One of
Ted’s favorite themes is “Don’t Travel with
Tom Hanks” which includes Castaway, Sully,
Captain Phillips, and Apollo 13.
Do you have stacks of VHS or 8mm, but no
working equipment to watch them on? We’re
here to help! Make an appointment to visit
our amazing Digital Media Lab, located in
the MakerSpace.
and Television Shows)
For the streaming formats, you can search
for specific titles through our catalog. But
you also might enjoy browsing through the
digital collections online. It’s easy to link to at
deerfieldlibrary.org/movies.
Roku
The Roku provides one of the simplest ways
to stream entertainment to your TV. DPL
patrons can access popular TV shows and
movies from Netflix, Hulu, Acorn, and Disney+, and view our digital collection of over
500 movies through the Vudu app.
The Roku comes with simple setup instructions, and you can also watch the “Get Started”
video at deerfieldlibrary.org/roku.
Convert your 8mm, VHS to digital
We offer equipment for converting various
types of media into digital files (video, audio,
and photos). Even better, our staff will help
you get started. Equipment includes:
n
8mm and Super 8 film
n
Audio cassettes
n
Non-copyrighted CD / DVD
n
Film (35mm strips, mounted slides,
and medium format strips)
n
Photographs up to 8.5” × 11.7”
n
VHS tapes
n
Vinyl records
We can also convert video from various types
of video cameras.
DPL Patron Jeanne Schlax has been utilizing
the MakerSpace to digitize her collection of
80+ 8mm home movies. “We have footage
going back to the 1950s. It’s important to
convert the films before they fade and get too
brittle,” said Jeanne. “The library staff has been
very helpful training on the equipment, and I
learn more each visit. This gives me peace of
mind that our family stories can continue to
be shared for generations to come.”

Holiday Used Book Sale
Saturday, November 20
10:00am – 3:00pm • Library Lower Level
Join us for a fun shopping day with some super bargains!
We will have a wide selection of cookbooks, children’s books,
audio books, coffee table books, and much more!
• Gifts from the Friends: Our fundraising enables us to make
donations that support Library programs and facilities, like our recent
gift of a laser engraver for the MakerSpace. We are currently raising
funds for the new Browsing Bins in Youth Services. Stay tuned for
more projects to come!
• Thank you: As always, we owe a big thank you to our shelving
volunteers for all their hard work sorting, organizing and keeping our
book store shelves full for our patrons. Their dedication is what makes
our sale corner so inviting. One of our veteran volunteers has made a
weekly trip to bring books to commuters at the train station for over
10 years, and our thanks go to him as well.
• Friends’ Book Store: The Store is stocked with children’s books, cookbooks, travel books, reference works and fiction. These used books are
in excellent condition and make great gifts year round. We are proud
that 98% of our sales go directly to support programs at the Library.
• Meetings: Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, January
24, 7:00 p.m., in the Library lower level meeting rooms. Visitors are
always welcome.

Message from the Director
Some folks say that
winter is the dull
season, but not at
Deerfield Public
*
Library! We’re
ablaze with all the
possibilities we envi
sioned when our Library Board and
management team met recently to dis
cuss service expectations and emerging
trends in society. Now, we are using
what we learned to plan for an exciting
transformation.
■
One trend we are addressing is the desire
for convenient, personalized services. You
want your library resources and services
available when you need them, not just
when we are open. Now, you can place
your own holds, request e-mail notifica
tion about library materials, and down
load e-audiobooks. You can even have
program updates, new titles in your
choice of interests, and the New York
Times Bestseller List e-mailed to you! Not
sure how? We’ll be happy to get you started.
We shared the news about new Library
services this fall at many community
events. A presentation to the Chamber of
Commerce, booths at Community Services
Day and the 50+ Expo, visits to the high
school, and support of Arts & Riverwoods
are just a few examples of our ongoing
involvement in our community.
Throughout this newsletter you’ll read
how partnerships with local organizations
and businesses also have helped create
new grant opportunities and a communi
ty-wide book discussion. We aren’t just
joiners—we’re doers! Invite us to YOUR
next community event!

New Year’s Evolution
What have we resolved to do even better in the New Year? The Deerfield Public
Library wants to exceed your expectations! We are creating new ways to serve
the community, and we’re enhancing the Library collections and services that
you and your families tell us you love. Some of the innovations you will notice
right away are an expanded Multimedia department, “Reading Warriors: A Guys
Read Program” for boys in 3rd - 5th grade, and “One Book, One Zip Code,” a
community-wide reading program for adults.
Multimedia Department
Did you know that Deerfield Public Library patrons checked out almost as many
discs and DVDs as books last year? The Library is responding to this demand for
audiovisual materials by increasing staff and services in its new Multimedia
department.
You’ll find
• More staff members specially trained to
answer your questions about movies,
music, and more
• Reclassified CDs to make finding the
right items easier than ever (Next, we’ll
reclassify the audiobooks and separate
them into fiction and nonfiction.)
• New formats—including *Wii games,
*Playaways, and *downloadables
• Multiple copies of popular items
• Musical scores and media-related
magazines
*MediaSpeak
Wii: Nintendo’s most recent video
game console, distinguished by its
wireless controller
Playaways: Portable MP3 players
preloaded with one audiobook each
Downloadables: Text or audio files
that can be downloaded to your
computer and enjoyed at home or
transferred to a portable device
Reading Warriors: A Guys Read Program
Girls continued to outperform boys in reading this year, according to a recent
national study. Deerfield Public Library wants to address that trend and encour
age reading and library use among elementary school boys next year, with pro
grams and services supported by a Library Services and Technology Act grant of
$2,876. The Library will use funds awarded to “Reading Warriors: A Guys Read
Program” to survey boys in 3rd—5th grades on their reading preferences; offer a
workshop led by an expert on boys’ literacy for parents and teachers; and
increase the number of “boy-friendly” books, booklists, and programs the Library
provides.
Adult Programs
Programs are free and open to the public. Please register in advance by calling 847-945-3311.

Dear Neighbor:
This past year, a group of volunteers formed The
Friends of the Deerfield Public Library, a not-forprofit organization dedicated to enriching the
library’s materials, services and programs. Our
first project is to raise $1,200 to purchase
Playaways, ready-to-go digital audiobooks which
are about the size of a deck of cards.
Our group has been involved in several activities
to establish our presence in the community. To
introduce ourselves to the community and provide
information about our group, we assisted the
Library with several of their events. We maintain
the book spinner at the Deerfield Train Station,
which has provided hundreds of free used books
to commuters. In September we had a booth at
the Farmer’s Market and at Deerfield Community
Days. In addition, we recently assumed responsi
bility for the sale and maintenance of the
ongoing used book sale at the Library.
Please help us in our efforts to assist the
Deerfield Public Library by becoming an annual
member of the Friends for $15 or more. We
welcome and appreciate all donations. Your gift
is tax-deductible as allowed by law.
THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND OF THE
DEERFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY!

Income Tax Forms
Why was the Library closed?
A limited number of the most-used tax forms
for individuals will be available in the Libraiy
beginning in January. Get all federal forms at
imw.irs.gov or by phoning 1-800-TAX-FORM
(1-800-829-3676). Get all Illinois forms at
iwow.tax.illinois.gov or by phoning
1-800-356-6302. Small-business owners and anyone
needing multiple copies of forms should place
orders directly with the federal or state govern
ment for home delivery. Income tax assistance will
be available from IRS-trained AARP volunteers at
the Library from 1 - 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and
Fridays from February 1 through April 15.
We realize it is inconvenient for you when we are
closed and you need us. From time to time, we
close in order to provide staff training that can
help us better serve you. For example, last June
we learned about fire safety and practiced using
fire extinguishers! In October, all employees had
an orientation to our basic reference services and
also learned the steps we will follow to transition
to a new automation system next year. We try to
keep closures to a minimum and to use the time
wisely in ways that ultimately will benefit you.
