Summer 2023 | deerfieldlibrary.org
Express Yourself with a special
Summer Reading Program
Details on page 2
From the Director
FINALLY! Summer is here. I invite you to
maximize your summer enjoyment with one
of the many amazing items in our Library of
Things (LOT) collection.
If you’re craving an outdoor movie
experience, check out a backyard movie
bundle. This was an addition to our LOT
collection during the summer of 2020 and
it was so popular! We have everything you
need to host a backyard movie party. The kit comes with a DVD
player, a blow-up screen, a blower fan, all the appropriate cords
and remote controls, and plastic stakes. Don’t forget to check
out one of our new movies too! While we don’t supply the
popcorn and candy for your backyard movie night, we have
the big stuff you need.
We have a variety of backyard games like cornhole, outdoor
Jenga, bocce ball, giant Tic-Tac-Toe, and checkers. We recently
added a very popular game, Slammo (aka Spikeball).
You’ve seen it…players have a little ball that you slam on
a small net. We also have added Yard-zee, huge dice with a
dry-erase scorecard.
Pickleball sets are available to check out for your next trip to
a Deerfield Park District pickleball court. Explore the night
skies with one of our telescopes, and learn about butterflies
and bugs with a nature kit. Finally, we have travel kits with all
the things you need to keep the kiddos entertained on your
upcoming trip.
For our friends that are spending time in the water, we have a
fishing magnet. This is a multi-use magnet that is designed for
fishing or recovering lost objects underwater. It’s a bit unusual!
Enjoy your summer! As always, please feel free to reach out to me
at amy@deerfieldlibrary.org with any questions or comments.
Amy Falasz-Peterson, Library Director
Find Your Voice:
Join the Soundscape of Summer Readers!
Our voices have power. We use our voices to share stories, express ourselves, and spark
change. Our voices include not only the sounds we make, but the words we write, the
art we create, the movements we perform, and the actions we take each day to impact
our world. Presented with support from the Friends of the Deerfield Public Library.
Children and Teen Summer Reading Program
June 10 - August 6
Birth-Grade 12
Make sure your unique voice is heard by participating in the “Find
Your Voice” Summer Reading Program! Track your reading, complete
activities, and attend programs all summer long.
How to sign up for the Children and Teen
Summer Reading Program:
Register online or at the Library any time on or after June 10.
How it Works:
In order to participate in weekly drawings and earn prizes along the
way, be sure to update your progress each week, either at the Library
or online. Be sure to attend programs for the opportunity to earn
bonus tickets.
All Youth and Teens who complete the program will receive a free
book and an entry into our grand prize drawing! Anyone who finishes the Summer Reading Program after it officially ends on August 6
will receive a book while supplies last. Be sure to check out all of the
Library’s exciting activities throughout the summer!
2
Grand Prize Drawing:
Three winners from each age group (Birth-PreK, K-5, 6-12) will be
selected this year for the Grand Prize Drawing. Winners will receive
a gift card to the Deerfield Park District or a year-long membership
to one of the following Chicago Museums: Adler Planetarium, Art
Institute of Chicago, Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry,
Shedd Aquarium.
National research from Dominican University finds that students
who participate in public library summer reading programs:
• Scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning
of the next school year than those who did not participate.
• Spent more time reading over the summer, read more
books, were well prepared for school in the fall, and read
more confidently.
• Reading even just six books over the summer will help keep
your child’s mind sharp.
Encourage the young people in your life to participate in the
Summer Reading Program!
See page 12 to meet the artist that created this year’s
Summer Reading Program logo.

Staff Profiles
From your responses to our Community Survey last year, it became clear that the most valued resource
at DPL is our staff! That inspired the introduction of this new occasional feature to let you get to know a
bit more about the amazing people that work here. Enjoy!
• Currently watching: The Night Agent on Netflix, but my favorite shows are
Last Kingdom and Outlander. I always return to The Lord of the Rings film series.
• Fun fact: I have a degree in Architectural Drafting from my home country, Colombia.
One of my hobbies is making custom greeting cards out of parchment. I love dancing and
listening to music – English or Spanish – I don’t discriminate.
Patricia
• Working for DPL the past five years has been like visiting a fair, lots of fun and something new and
exciting around every corner. The staff is so friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and supportive.
Library Aide
• Currently watching: The Mandalorian, Season 3.
• Fun fact: I have a PhD in Old Testament studies from Trinity International University,
and I teach Old Testament courses part-time for Trinity and Wheaton College. I am a
native Texan, who loves the library, barbecue and football (especially the Dallas Cowboys!).
By the way, did you know that Texas used to be its own country?
• I started at DPL in 2013 as an assistant when I was a student at Trinity. Working with
the public was the perfect job to balance with my studies, and in 2018, I accepted the
promotion to my current position.
Lance
Patron Services
Assistant Manager
• Currently reading: Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White.
• Fun fact: During my free time, I enjoy doing cross stitch projects. Right now, I’m working on a
cross stitch of the beloved dog of a DPL colleague.
Sam
• I was hired in 2018 as a Library Aide, and soon after enrolled to earn my Masters in Library Science
from the University of Illinois. Now I maintain our movie, music and video game collections, as well
as the Library of Things collection. I enjoy defying the expectations of the things our community
can check out from a library!
Multimedia Librarian
• Currently watching/playing: The Last of Us
• Fun Fact: 90% of my free time is spent playing Dungeons & Dragons. My favorite class
is cleric! Also, you may see me running around town training for my next half marathon.
• I’ve been with the library for the past decade, and am excited for the next decade!
If you’ve ever had a local history question, I probably found the answer for you!
Anne
Adult Services
Assistant Manager
• Currently reading: The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, and The Complete Works of
St. John of the Cross.
• Fun fact: I studied Near-Eastern Archaeology and enjoy going on excavations in Israel.
• My favorite thing about the library is our patrons. Life can be tough, and we work hard to meet
you where you are at, and help where we can. This can include sitting down together for one-onone tech help, and also my monthly delivery of materials for our homebound patrons.
Chase
10
Adult Services Associate
 • Currently reading: Aniana del Mar Jumps In by Jasminne Mendez.
• Fun fact: I knit and crochet, and the first knitting project I ever finished was an exact
replica of the scarf that Tom Baker wore as Doctor Who – it’s a 13 foot long scarf!
• As one of the newer staff members, I really have enjoyed my time at DPL and felt
welcomed right away. My favorite thing about my role is that I get to help with collection
development for the juvenile books and graphic novels. I joke that I still only read kids
books for my job, but really it’s my favorite age range. The only reason I met my 100 book
reading goal last year was because I read 50% graphic novels!
Emily
Youth Services
Assistant Manager
• Currently reading: an Advanced Reader Copy (pre-publication) of Lei and the Fire Goddess
by Malia Maunakea.
• Fun fact: I love creating handmade cards; last year, I sent out 100 cards!
Kary
• I’ve been doing storytimes and working with the amazing early childhood educators in Deerfield
for 15 years now! It’s also a joy to collaborate with the DPS 109 librarians and staff and do booktalks
and other programs for the students. We’re lucky to have such wonderful educators in Deerfield.
School Outreach
Coordinator
• Currently listening to: Three Feet High And Rising by De La Soul.
• Fun fact: I am a musician, and have been active in the punk music scene for almost 30 years.
• For my first decade at DPL, I worked in Adult Services and probably answered a question or
two for you at the Media desk. I also coordinated Books to Go for our homebound patrons.
I jumped over to the MakerSpace last year, and am having loads of fun with our staff and
creative visitors. Stop by and see what we are all about!
Ted
MakerSpace Manager
Visit us at Family Days! Please stop by our booth at the
Deerfield Family Days celebration on July 4 to check out all of
the ways the Friends of the Deerfield Public Library is helping to
improve the library experience for everyone. We’ll be in Jewett
Park – hope to see you there!
Consider joining the Friends! We love welcoming new
members to assist us with our primary goal – improving the
programming and offerings at our local library. The Friends have
funded a wide variety of projects, including Memory Kits, new
browsing bins in the children’s section, furniture upgrades, and
the upcoming summer reading program. None of that would be
possible without the support of our wonderful community. For
more information, visit our website.
Are your bookshelves overflowing? If so, consider donating
books in good condition to us! The Friends run Deerfield’s only
(used) book store, and it is all based on contributions from
people like you! All genres of books are accepted as well as DVDs
and video games, but we’re always especially on the lookout
for gently used cookbooks and children’s books. All of the
proceeds from our sales are directed back to library projects.
Our next meeting will be June 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the library – all
community members are welcome!
Visit our website for more information: deerfieldlibrary.org/friends-of-the-library
The Friends can be contacted at 847-945-3311 x8895 or at friends@deerfieldlibrary.org
The Friends is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit group. Contributions may be deductible under IRS regulations.

Summer Reading Logo
Competition Winner
The inspired “Find Your Voice” logo you see in this
newsletter was created by Deerfield High School artist
William Love IV. The winning design was chosen through
a competition organized for students in the Advanced and
AP Graphic Design classes. Participants met multiple times
with DPL staff, providing the students an opportunity
to learn about the Library’s summer program, discuss
their artistic vision, and receive feedback throughout the
design process. Many thanks DHS teachers Tim Bleck and
Chris Sykora for their expert guidance.

Take the Road Less Traveled
with a Special Summer Reading Program
Details on page 2
From the Director
Dearest gentle readers, did you miss me?
Some of our readers may recognize my
opening line from Lady Whistledown’s
writing that features prominently in the
Netflix series Bridgerton. I have used
these past winter months and rainy
spring months to catch up on shows like
Bridgerton. But, now, oh, the promise of
warm weather and sunshine is what is
getting me outside. Reading outside makes me outdoorsy!
This issue features all of our exciting activities around this year’s
Summer Reading Program theme, “Read Beyond the Beaten
Path.” Our amazing staff has developed creative and engaging
programs for all ages. A 2021 study found that students lost
between 17-34% of their learning from the previous year over
the summer. Our summer program encourages students to
keep reading! And, remember that listening to an audiobook is
also reading.
Our youngest patrons don’t get to have all the fun. Adults can
participate in our year long program, Read Around the World.
We have monthly reading challenges based on the world’s 24
time zones. Our Adult Services staff have created reading lists
that you can find on our website or at our service points.
I try to be outside as much as possible in the summer months.
This upcoming summer will be no exception. My family
has some vacations planned that include hiking, and even
camping! We will, of course, be reading beyond the beaten path.
Amy Falasz-Peterson, Library Director
Read Beyond the Beaten Path:
Adventure, Discovery and New Horizons
Experience the joy that awaits when you travel with a book
down a road not yet taken. Discover the exhilaration of
visiting a world full of new ideas, sounds, traditions and
amazing people. Presented with support from the Friends
of the Deerfield Public Library.
How to sign up for Children’s and Teen Summer
Reading Program?

From the Director
By now, regular Browsing readers know I
grew up in a family of readers, my kids are
carrying on the tradition. After all, their
mother is a librarian...it’s required.
Last week, my daughter came home
from school with the Scholastic Book
Club catalog. She had circled something
on every page. After she was done, my
son took another colored pen and circled
just as many items. Now, I’m a librarian at a great library with a
robust collection! Why would I consider actually buying books?
I used this as an opportunity to find out why they want to own
books when I can check them out from the library.
My son loves all the Percy Jackson books, and my daughter loves
the series featuring “Front Desk.” They like that they have the
opportunity to take their time to read it and go back to re-read it.
They find comfort in the physical book themselves.
I was struck by that profound sentiment from my middle school-aged
children. And, I started to think about the idea of comfort. We are
entering winter in Chicagoland. Some years, it feels like the winter will
never end...gray days and bone-chilling cold. But, we have all found
ways to comfort ourselves. In my family, it’s with books. Winter is the
perfect time to hunker down and find comfort in the small things in
life. Happy reading!
Amy Falasz-Peterson, Library Director
Individually, they both replied that they like owning their own
books, especially if it’s a title that they particularly enjoyed.
The Wide World of Video at DPL
While the big world of video is always
in season, for many people, winter is a
time they ramp up their video viewing
and gaming. To help you prepare, we
want to make sure you know about
the rich collections (physical and
streaming) available for your winter
entertainment.
Video Games
Are you one of the 227 million in the
U.S. that play video games, solo and
with others? Per a 2021 report of the
Entertainment Software Association,
players say gaming inspires, provides
mental stimulation, and relieves stress.
Our library has a large collection of
games for Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series
X, Xbox One, Wii, and WiiU.
DPL staff is happy to help you discover
new games in our diverse collection.
Multimedia Librarian Ted Gray, who
oversees the video game collection,
loves the sports games like MLB The
Show, and FIFA. Also, the big open
world games like Skyrim, Fallout, and
Red Dead Redemption. Adult Services
Librarian Anne Jamieson recommends
Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Stardew
Valley, and Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.
For info on the newest additions to
the collection, visit deerfieldlibrary.

If you are the type that can’t get enough of
a specific genre or actor, be sure to look up
our Binge Box collection. Each Binge Box is
a themed collection of 4-6 DVDs, and only
counts as one checked-out item. One of
Ted’s favorite themes is “Don’t Travel with
Tom Hanks” which includes Castaway, Sully,
Captain Phillips, and Apollo 13.
Do you have stacks of VHS or 8mm, but no

and Television Shows)
For the streaming formats, you can search
for specific titles through our catalog. But
you also might enjoy browsing through the
digital collections online. It’s easy to link to at
deerfieldlibrary.org/movies.
Roku
The Roku provides one of the simplest ways
to stream entertainment to your TV. DPL
patrons can access popular TV shows and
movies from Netflix, Hulu, Acorn, and Disney+, and view our digital collection of over
500 movies through the Vudu app.
The Roku comes with simple setup instructions, and you can also watch the “Get Started”
video at deerfieldlibrary.org/roku.
Convert your 8mm, VHS to digital
We offer equipment for converting various
types of media into digital files (video, audio,
and photos). Even better, our staff will help
you get started. Equipment includes:
n
8mm and Super 8 film
n
Audio cassettes
n
Non-copyrighted CD / DVD
n
Film (35mm strips, mounted slides,
and medium format strips)
n
Photographs up to 8.5” × 11.7”
n
VHS tapes
n
Vinyl records
We can also convert video from various types
of video cameras.
DPL Patron Jeanne Schlax has been utilizing
the MakerSpace to digitize her collection of
80+ 8mm home movies. “We have footage
going back to the 1950s. It’s important to
convert the films before they fade and get too
brittle,” said Jeanne. “The library staff has been
very helpful training on the equipment, and I
learn more each visit. This gives me peace of
mind that our family stories can continue to
be shared for generations to come.”

Holiday Used Book Sale

Join us for a fun shopping day with some super bargains!
We will have a wide selection of cookbooks, children’s books,
audio books, coffee table books, and much more!
• Gifts from the Friends: Our fundraising enables us to make
donations that support Library programs and facilities, like our recent
gift of a laser engraver for the MakerSpace. We are currently raising
funds for the new Browsing Bins in Youth Services. Stay tuned for
more projects to come!
• Thank you: As always, we owe a big thank you to our shelving
volunteers for all their hard work sorting, organizing and keeping our
book store shelves full for our patrons. Their dedication is what makes
our sale corner so inviting. One of our veteran volunteers has made a
weekly trip to bring books to commuters at the train station for over
10 years, and our thanks go to him as well.
• Friends’ Book Store: The Store is stocked with children’s books, cookbooks, travel books, reference works and fiction. These used books are
in excellent condition and make great gifts year round. We are proud
that 98% of our sales go directly to support programs at the Library.
• Meetings: Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, January

always welcome.

From the Director
I’m writing this upon my return from
our first family vacation in over a year.
We have rediscovered a love for the
outdoors. During the past year, we took
advantage of the hidden gems of natural
beauty in greater Chicagoland. However,
this summer, we ventured to Rocky
Mountain National Park. I’m thrilled to
see my children’s reactions to these huge
mountains and their energetic enthusiasm to climb to the top!
We’ve spent a fair amount of time on this trip driving, and
you really get a sense of the vastly different landscape of our
country. Of course, I had to pay a visit to a local library as well.
Sure, we all serve different communities, but I’ve found in my
decades-long career that we all aim to best serve our unique
communities. During my conversation with the librarian, I was
struck by our approach to similar services. This particular library
had a Library of Things collection and they too can’t keep their
Wi-Fi hotspots on the shelf!
For this trip, I relied heavily on our Library’s Libby and Hoopla
apps. If you’re unfamiliar with these services, I can’t recommend
them enough. As a librarian, I am thrilled that my kids also love to
read. (I think if they didn’t, my “librarian” card would be revoked!)
They are thrilled with the comic book selection on Hoopla. On
this trip, access to e-books and videos was a lifesaver. It warmed
my heart to see my kiddos downloading their books to read
on the plane.
I’ve always equated fall with a new beginning. We continue to
look forward and have learned from the past year. We welcome
seeing our community inside the building, while reading and
supporting each other.
Amy Falasz-Peterson, Library Director
Welcome Back to New and Old Favorites at DPL
After a quick pivot when the library building closed on March
13, 2020, the reimagined, reengineered DPL was back up and
running. For many months, it was virtual and touchless only.
popular demand, we are going to continue with Grab & Go.
Check our website for pickup locations at the Library.
Now that we are back to our full schedule, seven days a week,
let’s get more fully reacquainted. Following is info about new
services created during the pandemic, as well as reminders
about returning and ongoing activities. We are so happy to
have you back!

Virtual Programs: Attendance for our virtual programs was in
the thousands! While a portion of our programming will transition
back to in-person, for convenience, some programs will continue
online. Cooking programs turned out to be one of our most
popular virtual experiences. Patrons appreciated being able to
follow along with the chef in realtime in their own kitchen. From
attendee Karen Grage: “Thank you again for all of the programs
you put together for the library. I’ve used my instant pot quite a bit
and still learned things tonight. The program worked really well
over Zoom and we had a delicious dinner!...That was really fun.”
Anytime Videos:
The wide mix of videos
on our YouTube channel
includes programs
for all ages. Some are
recordings of live Zoom
programs, and others are
special programs and
activities created especially for “anytime viewing.” Magicians, crafts,
storytimes, technology instruction, and more. Check it out at:

Study Rooms & Computers: Study rooms and computers
are again available in the Youth and Adult departments. The rooms
and computers are available on a first come, first serve basis.
Curbside Pickup: When the building was fully closed, we
averaged 120 touch-free pickups a day. Curbside regular David Julis
shared: “Our family enjoyed the ease and convenience of
scheduling pick-up times throughout the day so that we could
continue to enjoy reading new and different books!” Now that the
building is fully open, the demand for this service is much lower.
But we still plan to continue the service for the foreseeable future,
and it is currently available Monday-Friday, 10 a.m -12:00 p.m.

Welcome Back to New and Old Favorites at DPL
Library Lifeline: This service is for seniors and adults with
disabilities. These free one-on-ones and check-ins are provided
via phone, email, Skype, or Zoom. For more information contact
Vicki at vkarlovsky@deerfieldlibrary.org or leave a message at
847-580-8938.
PLACE Programs: PLACE stands for Public Library Access and
Community for Everyone. These social and educational programs
are for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as
well as their parents and caregivers. See page 3 for details about
the monthly evenings of friendship and fun.
Youth & Teens
Read-Along Collection: This brand new collection will
include Playaway picture bookpacks,
as well as Wonderbooks and Vox
Books. These new titles combine a
traditional printed picture book with
a built-in audio recording, perfect for
kids who can’t read to themselves
yet, or for anyone who wants to
listen to a story! Each book can be replayed dozens of times
without being recharged. And don’t worry about recharging
them yourself—we’ll take care of that when it is returned.
Launchpads: A great way to keep kids engaged and learning
all year round. Each tablet comes pre-loaded with themed
educational games and activities for specific age groups. Stop
by and check them out, and feel free to ask the Youth staff for
recommendations.
Stay & Play: To support safe play, loose toys and games are
still put away. Instead, while in the library, one family group at a
(cont. from page 2)
time can use a Stay & Play box. There are many different themed
boxes with a variety of creative activities. You might want to
check out one of the boxes with kinetic sand! The boxes are kept
at the Youth Services desk, and are quarantined after every use.
Teen Book Discussions: Deerfield teens continued to be
active readers throughout the pandemic. Book group regulars
Liam and Lucas Ford shared that the move from in-person to a
virtual platform still provided a fun time and generated lots of
interesting discussions. When asked for a book recommendation
from the past year, they gave four thumbs up for Black Wings
Beating by Alex London.
DPS 109 Partnership: Literary Scavenger Hunt!
DPL School Outreach Coordinator Kary Henry partners with
DPS 109 school librarians throughout the school year on a
variety of engaging projects. During this unique school year,
one new online adventure Wilmot students (grades 3-5) got to
participate in was a literary scavenger hunt!
During the live 30 minute online hunt the rules were:
Don’t leave the house to find the object, don’t take anything
breakable, and put everything back where it belongs. After
Kary showed the cover of a book popular in their school
library, and told them the related object to find, students ran
to find a fitting example and back to the screen to share.
What did they go looking for? One example, for a book about
the Titanic, the students had to find something that could
float. One of the most surprising items presented: When the
students went in search of something that makes noise, one
student returned with his baby brother! Everyone got a laugh
out of that – even the little brother!
This is just a handful of what we have to offer. But you library lovers know that! Feel free to be in touch with any questions.
One of the best ways to stay up to date on services and programs is by subscribing to our e-newsletter.

Fall Photography Scavenger Hunt
September – November 2021 • Teens and Adults
Flex your photography skills for a season-long nature photo
scavenger hunt. Participate in different themes to capture
Deerfield and the Chicagoland area in its autumn colors.
Open to teens (Grades 6-12) and adults. Submissions will
be displayed in the library. The community will vote on their
favorite photos and the winner will receive a grand prize! Please
email photography@deerfieldlibrary.org to submit your photos
digitally, or drop off physical copies at the Media or Youth desk.
Couldn’t Have Done it Without You!
Hats off to all our wonderful S.T.A.R. volunteers for making the library’s summer so productive and fun! Faced with a different type of volunteering than in previous years (virtual and
touch-free), teens lent their talents to creating art pieces, including book covers, writing blog
articles and Instagram Spotlight reviews of books, and putting kits together for programs.
Ten teens served as Book Buddies, partnering with a young student and reading together on
Zoom. Our teen volunteers really helped to color our world with reading this summer!
Many thanks to the Friends of the Deerfield Public Library for their sponsorship of a huge
rainbow of summer projects. This included sponsorship of the month-long Queer Poem-aDay project (deerfieldlibrary.org/queerpoemaday), supplies for the Kindness Garden kits,
and prizes for the Summer Reading Program. Their support made it possible to provide our
community with a wide variety of new insights and experiences.

What’s the best way to receive DPL updates?
Subscribe to our e-news at deerfieldlibrary.org/newsletters
From the Director
In 2020, DPL had the opportunity to
introduce some new services. Curbside
service was one of the best things that
came from 2020! In a very short time, we
had over 10,000 items checked out and
picked up using this brand new service.
Our resourceful staff continue to provide
this service, alternating with when the
building is open for browsing. If you
haven’t experienced curbside, you can find more information
at deerfieldlibrary.org/curbside-pickup.
Staff also learned that with modern technology, we can
work with patrons remotely to complete simple tasks such
as renewing library cards or even issuing new cards. Once a
patron completes the online form, a Patron Services staff
member will call to set up a virtual appointment. After the
process is complete, we can provide the card number for
immediate use of our electronic resources, and the physical
card is sent out via the mail. Find details and the application
form at deerfieldlibrary.org/patron-registration.
The pandemic left many people feeling isolated and
disconnected, and many senior citizens and persons with
disabilities lost critical social and educational lifelines. With
that in mind, soon after closing in 2020, we began offering
the Library Lifeline service for free one-on-ones and checkins. These are provided via phone, email, or a virtual platform.
We average about 20-25 monthly appointments, and plan to
continue this popular service. Read more about the Library
Lifeline at deerfieldlibrary.org/accessibility.
Finally, we saw a huge increase in program attendance. We
always knew that the community loved our programs and this
past year has affirmed that. Our staff learned quickly how to
offer virtual programs for patrons of all ages. In 2020, nearly
100,000 people attended a program either live online or
watched a pre-recorded program.
We continue to move forward and look forward to continuing
to serve our community.
Amy Falasz-Peterson, Library Director

Discover Deerfield: Local History Tours
If “staycation” travel looks to be your focus for summer 2021, let the Deerfield Public
Library serve as your travel guide. The Library-curated tours, which cover Deerfield
from its founding days to the present, can all be accessed on the Library’s website at
deerfieldlibrary.org/localtours. Guide maps and tour information also available
at the Library (lower level).
Deerfield Public Art Audio and Virtual Tours
Our guided walking tour explores the
sculptures and paintings publicly on display in
Deerfield. You can download the guide map,
and using along with the audio tour, take your
own self-guided tour. Allow approximately 35
minutes to complete the tour. Another tour
option is the 360 video tour, which includes a
condensed version of the audio tour, original interviews, and historic photos. Note: The art
tour was created in 2017. Updates coming soon.
Deerfield Cemetery Tour
The Library, in cooperation with the Deerfield
Cemetery Commission created two historical “inside
the gates” self-guided audio tours. The Cemetery is the
resting place of some of the first residents of Deerfield,
and is an engaging way to learn about the history of
Deerfield. The Veterans Tour includes those from every
war from the War of 1812 to Vietnam. The majority
of our veterans are from the Civil War, and all fought for the Union. Additional support for
these tours was provided by the American Legion Post 738 and the Deerfield Area Historical
Society. Please enter and exit through the front gate on Waukegan Rd.
Deerfield Train Station Tour
The historic Deerfield Road Train Station is the only building
in Deerfield on the National Register of Historic Places. But
that only came about through the vigorous advocacy of the
Deerfield Area Historical Society. Access the tour guide on the
website to find out about the building and the engaging history,
including a brief appearance in the movie, Risky Business.

Library Hours
8
Limited hours, Monday-Saturday.
Schedule subject to change.
For current hours, see
deerfieldlibrary.org/contact.
Less than four months after the vibrant
grand opening of the Library’s new MakerSpace in November 2019, the state-of-theart facility was silenced due to COVID. It
wasn’t long before MakerSpace staff started
reimagining the space and how it could still
be a vital resource for the community.
We recently re-opened the MakerSpace for
limited, by appointment only, in-person
sessions. But prior to this, and continuing, the
staff has been working with patrons through
virtual means on a variety of projects.
Full details about the MakerSpace
equipment and use, and access to the
online appointment forms are available at
deerfieldlibrary.org/makerspace. Learn
more about:
• MakerSpace Remote Services: Submit
projects for select equipment using an
online form. Our staff will then work
with you to coordinate dropping off or
purchasing materials, remote virtual
sessions, and project pickup. Virtual
sessions include one-on-one virtual
appointments, design assistance, and
watching your project run.
• Makerspace In-person Services:
Limited, single user sessions by
appointment only, limited to 90 minutes.
Masks are required with additional safety
protocols in place.
• Maker Video Tutorials: Pick up a new
skill with software tutorials created by
DPL staff.
Where to start? A good place would be to
sign up for the Virtual MakerSpace Tour,
Wednesday, June 2, 1:00-2:00 p.m. Bring
your questions for a live Q&A. Registration
is required. Visit the DPL Event Calendar to
register: https://deerfield.libnet.info/events.
Check the Adult and Youth Programs in this
issue for details on more upcoming MakerSpace-centered programs. No experience
needed! All programs will be virtual.
