I
xcitement is building over
the library’s newly remod
eled lower level. In Septem
ber there will be a grand
opening celebration. The reading
area will be named: Thomas E.
Parfitt Fiction Room. Parfitt retired
from the library board in 1993 after
22 years of service; he was library
board president for 20 of those years.
The library board Building Com
mittee includes Sue Benn, Diane Kraus
and Yvonne Sharpe. They said, “The
room will be warm, inviting and class)'.
.
Comfortable furnishings in
earthtones and wood will
be featured, but the
greatest element is a lot
of light with a relaxing
garden view.”
The remodeling, in
x
planning stages since 1992,
will provide 23% additional floor
space and 20% increased shelf space.
It will be paid for entirely by Tax
Increment Financing from the Vil
lage of Deerfield at no extra cost to
taxpayers.

You can now access a magazine in
dex database called Infotrac 2000
from any Dynix terminal in the
library. There are three databases
available: Business and Company
Profile ASAP, Health ASAP and
Magazine Index Plus (for current
affairs, consumer information,
travel, arts, entertainment). Coverage
is from 1992 to the present. Some
articles are citation only, some have
abstracts, and some are full text.
Librarians will be happy to assist
you in your search.
Across the Librarian’s Desk
Now that the Age of Espionage is ebbing and the
Age of Lawyers is fully upon us, I wonder what the
next great themes for fiction will be? Publishers have
so confused form for content and occupation for char
acter they no longer seem to know the difference. The
trend I see in popular fiction is a continuous reduction
in literate writing, the etching of character, compelling
dialogue, or even plot. What has replaced these ele
ments of literature is action, sex (and I don’t mean
gender), and a downscaling of the intelligence quo
tient to about the 6th grade level. Where is the literate
adult fare that is not murder, spies, or lawyers? What’s
next? I'll bet it will be software gurus. Fascinating.
Wolff Elected
Board
On April 4 Bill Seiden and David
Wolff were each elected to a six year
term on the Deerfield Library Board
of Trustees.Wolff, a manufacturers'
representative in metal forming,
said, “I wish to thank the Deerfield
voters for returning me to the
Library Board of Trustees for a sec
ond term. I shall work with the
board to continue the outstanding
level of service to our patrons within
the fiscal constraints of a limited
budget.” Seiden, an Illinois C.RA.,
is a retired corporate executive now
doing limited consulting. Seiden is
also committed to serving all of
Deerfield’s residents “working with
other board members to arrive at
meaningful decisions and to provide
excellent services for the community.”
As disappointing as the trend in books has been, it
has been outdone by the film industry. Action car

the wonderful musicals of the 1940’s and the great
“adult" film noir that defined films for so long? The real
question is where are the scripts that challenge and

with good writing? When did the term “adult” come
to mean skin? I remember being scared stiff by
Cary Grant and a glass of milk; now it takes chain
saws, body parts and gallons of blood to achieve
an effect.
Actually what we are seeing is the precursor
of a non-literate culture. Our country is becoming
visual instead of verbal with kids watching too
many thousands of hours of numbing television
and not reading books...and not knowing the dif
ference. Hence we have poor scripts, and non
literate books. Lawyers are seen as fascinating
characters in far too much fiction. It appears we
are abrogating our culture to publishers and me
dia and movie moguls who say “..no one reads,
only dumb kids go to the movies, trash for the
masses."
We know this not to be totally true. Barnes and
Noble and Borders validate the fact that Deerfield
has a literate and reading population. We look for
books and mature films that inspire and challenge
us. As an antidote, it is fortunate that we live in an
area of affordable theatre, not just the Shubert
and Goodman but the small ones, the Organic
Theatre, Next, Steppenwolf, Northlight, The Re
mains—the list is gratifyingly long. But even
though we read, it seems that media producers
are intent on reducing what is available to the low
est common denominator. Reductio adAbsurdum.
Apparently it makes money and that’s all that
seems to count today. The O.J. Simpson trial cov
erage is just a symptom of the widespread con
sumer entertainment disease—simple, mindless,
violent and visual.

It is ironic that we call for values and respon
sibility from any individual in this age of collective
irresponsibility. We ask for less violence on our
streets but pay to wallow in it in books and films.
We demand accountability but we don’t practice
O
it ourselves. Maybe that’s the real loss—our own
honesty and integrity. I have always been a firm
believer that today is “the good old days." But
when it comes to books and films, looking back
wards you see adult books and films that chal
lenged, entertained, inspired and enchanted...
made by people who read, wrote, and thought.
The book that I am recommending this month
is Rocking the Babies by Linda Raymond. This is
a book that makes you believe in people, reaffirm
real family values and inspires our highest in
stincts. Set in a hospital, the book examines those
who provide care and love to drug addicted newborns.

COURTAULD ART PREVIEW IS DECEMBER 7
As a special holiday treat, the
Deerfield Public Library will
present a preview slide/lecture
showing of the Impressionist and
Post-Impressionist Masterpieces:
The Courtauld Collection. The
presentation will begin at 7:30
p.m. Monday, December 7 in the
Eleanore T. Dawe Room.
Through the eyes of the artists,
Lee Gibbs will present many
views of 19th century French
life with a humanistic as well as
artistic approach. The artists
specialized in animation and
flux, illuminating shadows,
heightening colors and catching
the moment. Their brushstrokes
became mist, sparkle, shimmer
and brightness.
The collection, one of the
world’s most outstanding, is on
special loan until Jan. 3 to the
Art Institute of Chicago, from
the University of London’s
Courtauld Institute. It contains
many of the most important
French paintings of the period
from 1870 to 1910. The 48
selected paintings on view
include best known and beloved
works by Manet, Degas, Monet,
Renoir, Cezanne, Seurat,
VanGogh, Gauguin, and
Toulouse Lautrec among many
others.
Lee Gibbs, guest lecturer, is a
world traveled lecturer and
photographer and contains an
enthusiasm for her subject that
has gained her a sple.ndid
reputation in the Chicago area.
This event is free and open to
the public, but reservations are
requested. To reserve space,
please notify the Circulation
Desk, 945-3311.
LIBRARY/SCHOOL COOPERATION
IS WINNING IDEA
Jack Hicks, Head of the
Reference Dept., Deerfield
Public Library, and Gerri
Spinella, Language Arts teacher
at Wilmot Junior High, District
109, co-present a program at this
years’ Midwest Federation of
Library Associations Convention
in Indianapolis. Their program,
Library Instruction for Junior
High Students, was selected as a
unique example of cooperation
between two diverse community
organizations.
For the past seven years
Deerfield Public Library and
Wilmot Jr. High have conducted
a joint research skills program.
What started out on a casual
basis has grown into a significant
learning experience for the 8th
Grade students from Wilmot Jr.
High. Librarians and teachers
alike are enthusiastic about the
success of the project, which in
the past year was nominated as a
“Winning Curriculum Idea” by
the National Association of
Professional Educators.
Students are instructed in the
use of library reference
materials, the research process,
and the compiling of
bibliographies. The goal of the
projects is to increase the
students’ library skills, assure
success instead of frustration
when the student confronts
research for the first time,
demystify the library, and make
the students feel that library
research is within their
capabilities.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE
FOR THE NEW YEAR!
Mark calendars now for some
enlightening, free programs
scheduled for 1988 at Deerfield
Public Library. All programs
except Sunday begin at 7:30
p.m. and focus on YOU!
MONDAY, JANUARY 11 CHOICES FOR A RICHER
LIFE
“It’s great to have a genie to
press magic buttons, but it is
better to be your own genie;get
rid of the indecision, doubt and
fear. A richer life is a state of
mind’’ says Linda Fallucca,
Ph.D. Her 23 years as a
psychotherapist with intuitive
abilities will bring a unique
understanding to how we can
use our own intuition to make
posi tive* choices. We CAN
control our thoughts, attitudes,
actions and beliefs to choose a
richer life.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20 “NIPS, TUCKS AND YOU”
If the January blahs lead you to
begin thinking about tummy
tucks, face lifts, or other ways to
look and feel better, Cosmetic
Surgeon Steven Bloch of
Highland Park Hospital will offer
some of the pros and cons at this
evening meeting. Come take a
peek at some before and after
photos, and consider the
possibilities. The doctor will
focus on how it all affects you.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 24
This is a special event that
launches our new year at the
library and promises to be a
pretty terrific afternoon for the
whole family. Information will
be available in January.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2 LOOK MA! NO CAVITIES!
NO BRACES! NO SPACES!
Mark Cannon specializes in
dentristy for children (up to age
21) and will offer an insight for
parents about “when to do
what” to prevent tooth decay,
bite problems, ear infections,
etc. Expense, agony and time in
the dental chair can be avoided.
A friendly dentist, whose private
practice is in Long Grove,
Cannon is associated with a
number of area hospitals
including Highland Park,
Children’s Memorial and Good
Shepherd. He will put animation
and important knowledge into
his presentation and offer
practical help that will make for
healthier growing up years.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 I THOUGHT MY TAXES WERE
GOING DOWN! WHAT CAN I
DO NOW?
Just named by Money Magazine
as one of America’s best tax
practitioners, Gary S. Hart, a
Deerfield resident, offers the
inside information on preparing
1987 tax returns and planning
for 1988. Hart, a CPA and
president of Gary Hart &

discuss: finding hidden
deductions, what to do about
your IRA, structuring your loan
portfolio and avoiding tax
penalties.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 23 NEPAL ADVENTURE
Trekking season is almost upon
us and before guide Jim
Crosswhite leaves for Nepal he
visits Deerfield to take us on an
“armchair” ride to Nepal in the
Himalayas to trek the highest
mountain on Earth. Crosswhite
has trekked for months in Nepal,
rafted its rivers, and tracked
rhino on foot all within the
shadow of Mt. Everest. You’ll
view it all here in the library.

husband Frank.
Always optimistic and cheerful,
she was liked by staff and
patrons alike. She was here when
I came. Together we experienced
a referendum, a building
program, a move, expansion, and
the introduction of automation - - and those are just the
highlights!
She inspired great loyalty on the
part of her staff, and always gave
one hundred percent of herself
to whatever needed to be done.
We wish her the best of
everything and hope that she’ll
keep us posted on what’s going
on in her new life.

WHAT DR. RUTH FORGOT
TO TELL YOU: THE FACTS
On Tuesday, December 1,
Highland Park Hospital
obstetrician-gynecologist Doctor
Michael Benson will give a talk
at the library on basic sex facts.
He will review fertility,
contraception, sexually
transmitted diseases, and sexual
behavior. Dr. Benson says that
most adults in the United States
do not know the fertile time in a
woman’s menstrual cycle.
Sexually transmitted diseases are
becoming epidemic and teen
pregnancy rate in this country is
the highest in the developed
world. Despite all of the media
exposure, there are still
misunderstandings. A question
and answer session follows his
presentation which is open to
the public and begins at 7:30
p.m.
STAFF APPOINTMENTS
Pat Palmer has been promoted
to Circulation Supervisor. She is
a Deerfield resident, with five
children, who has been
Circulation Clerk at the library
for three years.
Sally Brickman has been
appointed Director of Public
Relations and Programming. She
will also assist at the Reference
Desk. A native Clevelander, she
holds a Master’s Degree in
Library Science from Case
Western Reserve University and
has worked as a librarian in
school, academic and public
libraries. For ten years she was
Editor/ Publicist at Case Western
Reserve University Libraries
specializing in library public
relations. An active member of
the American Library
Association, she was elected
chair of the executive committee
of the 2000 member Public
Relations Section and has led
many of its committees. Most
recently she was Public
Information Officer at the
Center for Research Libraries in
Chicago. She is particularly
proud of her two sons, ages 24
and 26.

FALL 1986 ADULT PROGRAMS
LIVING
ALONE
On Tuesday, September 9th
Dr. Helen Seline will talk to us
about how to deal with the
stresses of living alone,
suggesting psychological and
social solutions. Her program
entitled Living Alone:
Everyone's Dilemma will begin
at 7:30 pm in the library's
Eleanor Dawe Room.
Dr. Seline received her M.D.
from Northwestern Medical
School and completed her
psychiatric residency at the
University of Chicago. Her most
recent studies have been on the
evolution of human behavior in
the graduate Department of
Anthropology at Northwestern
University. She spent 17 years as
a consultant to the Irene Jocelyn
Clinic and has been in private
practice since 1968. Currently
she is working on a book for
women on the subject of
understanding men.
You probably have noticed
that now more and more men
and women find themselves
alone. In order to cope with this
it is necessary to understand our
need for others, as well as our
need for autonomy. For an
interesting discussion join us on
September 9th.
IDENTIFYING
THE TEENAGE
SUBSTANCE ABUSER
Mark Rosenthal, family
therapist in chemical
dependency at Glenbrook
Hospital, will present / Think
My Teenager May Have a
Problem: Identifying the
Teenage Substance Abuser, a
talk followed by a question and
answer period. This program,
offered by the Adult Services
Department, will begin at 7:30
pm on Tuesday, October 7th.
Mr. Rosenthal will examine
the many symptoms and phases
of chemical dependency. How
family members can identify a
drug problem will be discussed
by looking at changes (i.e.
behavioral, emotional, social,
and spiritual) a teenager
undergoes when a drug problem
exists. This will be a very
informative program so mark
your calendar!
MOMS AND DADS
OF PRESCHOOLERS ATTENTION!
Susan Sack, child and adult
psychotherapist, will return to
the Deerfield Public Library
with her program Living with a 3
to 5 Year Old - What's Normal?
on Tuesday, September 23rd at
7:30 pm.
This popular talk has been
presented for several years to
enthusiastic parents affording an
opportunity to ask questions in
the discussion period. Susan
Sack is an accredited member of
the ACSW and has a private
practice in Northbrook.
NOTE: We are pleased to see
an increasing number of fathers
attending our child development
talks. Sometimes they leave
Mom at home to baby-sit while
they attend the lecture. . .that's
a switch!
SPLITTING HEADACHES
We will have Dr. Lawrence
Robbins, neurologist specializing
in the management of the
patient with headaches, as a
guest speaker on Tuesday,
October 21st. His talk.
Headaches: What To Do About
Them, will begin at 7:30 pm.
Dr. Robbins, formerly
associated with the Diamond
Headache Clinic, now heads the
Robbins Headache Clinic at the
Northbrook Court Professional
Center. He will answer questions
as part of his program and
admission is free.

PEER PRESSURE
Associates in Adolescent
Psychiatry S.C. will send a Ph.D.
in Psychology to address the
subject, Peer Pressure in the 80's
on Tuesday, November 18th at
7:30 pm.
Parents going through their
child's difficult teen years have
to learn new ways of relating to
the child. While everyone in the
family is required to make
adjustments, the effects of peer
pressure can be relatively
uneventful when the child enters
adolescence emotionally and
psychologically prepared.
Come on November 18th for
professional pointers on avoiding
the difficulties or coping with
them if you have a problem. A
question and answer period will
end the program.
YEAR END TAX DECISIONS
On Wednesday, November
19th at 7:30 pm, Gary S. Hart,
C.P.A., will present Year-End
Tax and Investment Strategies —
(Under the Changing Tax Law).
Mr. Hart is president of Gary
Hart & Associates, Ltd., a
certified public accounting firm.
He holds an accounting degree
(with highest honors) from the
University of Illinois and an
M.B.A. (with distinction) from
Northwestern University. A
specialist in personal financial
planning and planning for the
closely-held business, he speaks
frequently on related subjects.
The lecture will include any
changes in the new tax law
which is now being hammered
out in Congress. Don't miss this

GUIDES TO
BOOK REVIEWS
Deerfield Public Library has
three very useful indexes to help
you find book reviews. The first
is Book Review Index, which
comes out bi-monthly
(Feb./ April /June /Aug. /Oct./
Dec.) and cumulates into a
hardbound yearly volume. There
is a main index arranged
alphabetically by author's last
name and also a title index.
Another index for book
reviews is Book Review Digest.
It is published monthly (except
in Feb. and July) and also has an
annual cumulative volume. The
main body consists of excerpts
from reviews arranged
alphabetically by author's last
name. Subject and title indexes
follow the main body.
The third guide to book
reviews is Reader's Guide to
Periodical Literature. At the end
of each issue of Reader's Guide,
there is a listing of book reviews
arranged alphabetically by
author's last name. For
assistance in locating book
reviews, ask a librarian for help.
NEW BOOKS SHELF/
RENTAL BOOKS
Located on the east wall of
our adult reading area (near the
fireplace) is our "new books"
shelf. It houses our newly
acquired books for periods of
four to six months (non-fiction)
and one year (fiction). The first
part of the "new books" shelf is
non-fiction, arranged by call
number. They are followed by
biographies, which are arranged
by subjects' last name. After
biographies come the fiction,
mysteries, and science fiction, all
arranged by author's last name.
Also on the "new books"
shelf are our rental books. These
are additional copies of books
which are currently popular and
are for patrons who are willing
to pay a minimal fee to read
them as soon as they can
without having to place a
reserve. The library charges 50
cents for five days and then 10
cents for each day after that.
Browse through our "new
books f f shelf to discover the
current titles and authors in the
world of books!

Deerfield Public Library has a
wide variety of atlases located in
our atlas drawers (next to our
current encyclopedias). We have
world atlases, U.S. atlases, and
many specialized atlases. These
cover areas such as history, the
Bible, individual countries,
astronomy, archeology, wars,
economics, etc.
The library also has a
collection of maps for reference
use. We have state transportation
maps and local street maps in
our vertical or pamphlet file. We
also house a collection of city
maps in our reference office. If
you need help locating
information in an atlas or a map,
just ask a librarian for assistance.
BOOK
DISCUSSION GROUP?
At one time Deerfield Public
Library sponsored an evening
book discussion group which
met monthly. After several
years, however, the number of
participants dwindled so it was
disbanded.
If enough interest is now
expressed the library will again
launch a group. Register with
Peggy McCabe at 945-3311 if
you would like to join.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN
Have you ever come to the
library and then discovered that
we didn't have the book you
wanted? If so, you'll be happy
to know that Deerfield Public
Library has Interlibrary Loan
(ILL) procedures.
ILL is a service provided by
the North Suburban Library
System (NSLS). Via ILL, a
patron may procure books
through their local library which
might otherwise be unavailable.
This service enables a library to
extend-its book lending services
beyond its own collection.
All NSLS member libraries,
cooperating library systems, and
the Illinois Library and
Information Network
(ILLINET) are the basis for the
service. ILLINET resources
include the Illinois State
Library, University of Illinois at
Urbana, Southern Illinois
University at Carbondale and at
Edwardsville, and Chicago Public
Library. If needed, other
libraries in the state or in the
country are used.
CENTRAL
SERIALS SERVICE
Central Serials Service (CSS)
of the NSLS is an aspect of ILL
which is concerned with and
limited to magazines,
newspapers, annuals,
government reports, and other
periodic/serial materials. This
service is also intended to
supplement the holdings of the
local library.
As with ILL, CSS is limited
to Deerfield residents only.
Other limitations include only
five requests per patron to be
submitted at one time (this
applies to ILL requests also);
and all photcopying involved is
subject to the limitations of
copyright legislation.
