Take the Road Less Traveled
with a Special Summer Reading Program
Details on page 2
From the Director
Dearest gentle readers, did you miss me?
Some of our readers may recognize my
opening line from Lady Whistledown’s
writing that features prominently in the
Netflix series Bridgerton. I have used
these past winter months and rainy
spring months to catch up on shows like
Bridgerton. But, now, oh, the promise of
warm weather and sunshine is what is
getting me outside. Reading outside makes me outdoorsy!
This issue features all of our exciting activities around this year’s
Summer Reading Program theme, “Read Beyond the Beaten
Path.” Our amazing staff has developed creative and engaging
programs for all ages. A 2021 study found that students lost
between 17-34% of their learning from the previous year over
the summer. Our summer program encourages students to
keep reading! And, remember that listening to an audiobook is
also reading.
Our youngest patrons don’t get to have all the fun. Adults can
participate in our year long program, Read Around the World.
We have monthly reading challenges based on the world’s 24
time zones. Our Adult Services staff have created reading lists
that you can find on our website or at our service points.
I try to be outside as much as possible in the summer months.
This upcoming summer will be no exception. My family
has some vacations planned that include hiking, and even
camping! We will, of course, be reading beyond the beaten path.
Amy Falasz-Peterson, Library Director
Read Beyond the Beaten Path:

Summer Reading Program
Details on pages 2 and 7
What’s the best way to receive DPL updates?
Subscribe to our e-news at deerfieldlibrary.org/newsletters
From the Director
In 2020, DPL had the opportunity to
introduce some new services. Curbside
service was one of the best things that
came from 2020! In a very short time, we
had over 10,000 items checked out and
picked up using this brand new service.
Our resourceful staff continue to provide
this service, alternating with when the
building is open for browsing. If you
haven’t experienced curbside, you can find more information
at deerfieldlibrary.org/curbside-pickup.
Staff also learned that with modern technology, we can
work with patrons remotely to complete simple tasks such
as renewing library cards or even issuing new cards. Once a
patron completes the online form, a Patron Services staff
member will call to set up a virtual appointment. After the
process is complete, we can provide the card number for
immediate use of our electronic resources, and the physical
card is sent out via the mail. Find details and the application
form at deerfieldlibrary.org/patron-registration.
The pandemic left many people feeling isolated and
disconnected, and many senior citizens and persons with
disabilities lost critical social and educational lifelines. With
that in mind, soon after closing in 2020, we began offering
the Library Lifeline service for free one-on-ones and checkins. These are provided via phone, email, or a virtual platform.
We average about 20-25 monthly appointments, and plan to
continue this popular service. Read more about the Library
Lifeline at deerfieldlibrary.org/accessibility.
Finally, we saw a huge increase in program attendance. We
always knew that the community loved our programs and this
past year has affirmed that. Our staff learned quickly how to
offer virtual programs for patrons of all ages. In 2020, nearly
100,000 people attended a program either live online or
watched a pre-recorded program.
We continue to move forward and look forward to continuing
to serve our community.
Amy Falasz-Peterson, Library Director

Discover Deerfield: Local History Tours
If “staycation” travel looks to be your focus for summer 2021, let the Deerfield Public
Library serve as your travel guide. The Library-curated tours, which cover Deerfield
from its founding days to the present, can all be accessed on the Library’s website at
deerfieldlibrary.org/localtours. Guide maps and tour information also available
at the Library (lower level).
Deerfield Public Art Audio and Virtual Tours
Our guided walking tour explores the
sculptures and paintings publicly on display in
Deerfield. You can download the guide map,
and using along with the audio tour, take your
own self-guided tour. Allow approximately 35
minutes to complete the tour. Another tour
option is the 360 video tour, which includes a
condensed version of the audio tour, original interviews, and historic photos. Note: The art
tour was created in 2017. Updates coming soon.
Deerfield Cemetery Tour
The Library, in cooperation with the Deerfield
Cemetery Commission created two historical “inside
the gates” self-guided audio tours. The Cemetery is the
resting place of some of the first residents of Deerfield,
and is an engaging way to learn about the history of
Deerfield. The Veterans Tour includes those from every
war from the War of 1812 to Vietnam. The majority
of our veterans are from the Civil War, and all fought for the Union. Additional support for
these tours was provided by the American Legion Post 738 and the Deerfield Area Historical
Society. Please enter and exit through the front gate on Waukegan Rd.
Deerfield Train Station Tour
The historic Deerfield Road Train Station is the only building
in Deerfield on the National Register of Historic Places. But
that only came about through the vigorous advocacy of the
Deerfield Area Historical Society. Access the tour guide on the
website to find out about the building and the engaging history,
including a brief appearance in the movie, Risky Business.

Limited hours, Monday-Saturday.
Schedule subject to change.
For current hours, see
deerfieldlibrary.org/contact.
Less than four months after the vibrant
grand opening of the Library’s new MakerSpace in November 2019, the state-of-theart facility was silenced due to COVID. It
wasn’t long before MakerSpace staff started
reimagining the space and how it could still
be a vital resource for the community.
We recently re-opened the MakerSpace for
limited, by appointment only, in-person
sessions. But prior to this, and continuing, the
staff has been working with patrons through
virtual means on a variety of projects.
Full details about the MakerSpace
equipment and use, and access to the
online appointment forms are available at
deerfieldlibrary.org/makerspace. Learn
more about:
• MakerSpace Remote Services: Submit
projects for select equipment using an
online form. Our staff will then work
with you to coordinate dropping off or
purchasing materials, remote virtual
sessions, and project pickup. Virtual
sessions include one-on-one virtual
appointments, design assistance, and
watching your project run.
• Makerspace In-person Services:
Limited, single user sessions by
appointment only, limited to 90 minutes.
Masks are required with additional safety
protocols in place.
• Maker Video Tutorials: Pick up a new
skill with software tutorials created by
DPL staff.
Where to start? A good place would be to
sign up for the Virtual MakerSpace Tour,
Wednesday, June 2, 1:00-2:00 p.m. Bring
your questions for a live Q&A. Registration
is required. Visit the DPL Event Calendar to
register: https://deerfield.libnet.info/events.
Check the Adult and Youth Programs in this
issue for details on more upcoming MakerSpace-centered programs. No experience
needed! All programs will be virtual.

Deerfield Public Library
Winter 2019-20 | deerfieldlibrary.org
Check Out a Museum Today!
Details on page 2
From the Director
The end of 2019 marks the conclusion of
our current Strategic Plan. This plan came
out of months of work in 2016. I’m so
proud of all the work the Library staff has
done to meet the goals outlined in the
plan. By the time this edition of Browsing
is delivered, the new MakerSpace will
almost be completed and ready to open
to the public. The MakerSpace project came from our
Strategic Plan. We found out that our community was
interested in more technology and hands-on programs
here at the Library. By adding the MakerSpace, we are
able to offer these new experiences. Watch our website,
deerfieldlibrary.org/makerspace for updated information
about the Grand Opening for this new space.
In the upcoming year, the Library will continue to explore and
expand our efforts to provide the community with open access
to ideas and information in a welcoming environment. We
continually evaluate our programs and services.
It’s hard to believe that we are just a few months away from
entering a new decade, and one that comes with an extremely
important initiative: Census 2020. The Library will be working
to promote and provide information about the Census. Did you
know that this is the first time in history that you will be able to
fill out your Census form online? An important role for a public
library in the Census initiative is to provide a safe place for
people to fill out the online Census form. Watch our website for
more information about the 2020 Census.

have read stories about immigration, race, mental health, as well as graphic novels
and speculative fiction. Patrons have told us how much they appreciate this program;
challenging them to read something they never would have on their own.

A RuffRoad, Home: The
Court Case Dogs ofChicago
Tuesday, July 19, 7:00-8:30pm
Real People, Real Stones
is a new series which focuses
on ordinary people with
extraordinary stories.
Not long ago, Chicagoland animals
seized from neglectful or criminally
charged owners were viewed solely
as evidence. They were rescued, but
then languished in a kennel until
their owners’ court cases concluded,
and then they were typically
euthanized. In 2010, Safe Humane
Chicago launched the Court Case
Dogs program - a not-for-profit
group that gets these animals
rehabilitated and adopted. Cynthia
Bathurst, co-founder of Safe Humane
Chicago, will discuss this thriving
program and its team of volunteers,
dog trainers, behavioral consultants,
partner organizations and lastly, the
court case dogs who moved beyond
their histories and into homes of
people who love them. A RuffRoad
Home by Susan Russell will be
available for purchase. Due to
sensitive material, please no
children under 10. ©

Leading from Vision to Reality
It’s hard to believe we have now been in
our new Library spaces almost a year.
During those crucial transitional years of
planning for the referendum and making
the vision of exciting new Library spaces a
reality, we were fortunate to have stable,
dedicated leadership on the Library Board.
Ken Abosch has served as President since
2008, and we invited him to share his
thoughts for this issue ofBrowsing.
Thank you, Ken, for your years of
successful leadership at the helm of the
Deerfield Public Library Board of Trustees.
Mary Pergander
Library Director
In May I will be transitioning out of the
Library Board President role after having
served in this positionfor the last six
years. I will continue to be an active
member of the Board and represent the
constituents ofDeerfield and Library
patrons everywhere in creating a great
Library experience!
These last six years have seen tremendous
advancesfor the Deerfield Public Library
culminating in the wonderful renovated
facility we now all enjoy and are proud to
have in our community. The quality of
our Board members, the dedication of our
staff, the collaboration and supportfrom
Village ofDeerfield officials, and the trust
and commitment rom
f the public has
made this all possible.
I appreciate the confidence the Board has
shown in allowing me to lead this
organization and lookforward to even
greater accomplishmentsfor the Library
in the years ahead!

BROWSING
at the DEERFIELD
PUBLIC LIBRARY
920 Waukegan Rd.
Deerfield. IL 60015
Summer 1990
Vol. 5, No. 3
/lcn,<x44 t&e
What is going to happen to fiction in the
next few years? A real genre staple has been
the anti-Russian-Berlin Wall-British-spyas-savior book. Deighton, Clancy,
LeCarre, Follett, Ludlum, Higgins—the
list goes on forever—have made a cottage
industry and sizeable fortunes bashing the
USSR and the Berlin Wall. What are they
going to do without those all-powerful com
rades to knock flat? The thread of so many
books has been villain-as-non-person; hurt,
violently punished, crushed and shot to
pieces because he deserved it.
Since fiction so often closely reflects
values of the Society in which it was writ
ten, what will the future hold and will the
new array of slimy villains be from the
U.S., or Asia, or the Middle-East? These
books have angry themes of alienation, with
convenient targets for our aggressions.
Hopefully, Fiction will see a renaissance of
creative ideas with a message of reconcilia
tion, gentleness, and healing.
Can the literary conventions we have all
come to accept collapse of their own weight
like the Berlin Wall, or will we insist on a
clone-like perpetuation of the themes of
hate and alienation for the next decade? I
certainly hope that writers don't seek out
the nearest enemy and reinvent this genre
all over again. With the runaway success of
*'
the movie, “Hunt for Red October,
maybe I'm the only one who would like to
see an end to hate and fear in our everyday
reading.
The book we are recommending this
month comes from Martha Sloan, our
Readers’ Services Librarian, who thinks
very highly of Floating in my Mother’s
Palm, by Ursula Hegi, a novel which
evokes a warm and loving childhood in
postwar Germany where Hiker’s name is
never mentioned.
----- Jack Alan Hicks
Administrative Librarian
No chance for boredom when you
‘ ‘beach it” staying tuned to Station READ
for fun, reading relaxation and prizes in the
Youth Services Department this summer.
The Summer Reading Club begins the
week of June 18 and enrollment is
unlimited! Books you read will be record
ed on a jukebox folder. Preschoolers and
kindergarteners can join their own Read To
Me Club, and fill their beach bucket folder
with their favorite titles. The last day to
report on books will be Friday, July 27.
Remember: the greatest reading hits will
be found at 1990 on your Waukegan Road
dial! Grab your radio, beach chair,
sunglasses and books and join us. See
Young People’s page inside for more sum
mer fun at the library and stop in for a
summer program booklist.
So, What’s New?
Look around and you will see many new
improvements designed to serve you better.
—Photocopy charges have been reduced
from 15 cents to 10 cents.
—Lights in the upstairs meeting room
improved to raise the candlepower and
light diffusion; dimmer switches for con
venience, Juno track lights “on stage’’ so
evening program speakers can be seen as
well as heard! New microphones and sound
systems also have been installed in both
meeting rooms.
—New shelving in the fiction room to pro
vide more space for new fiction, all Large
Print books, and most of the libraries’ short
story collections. Short stories including
mysteries and science fiction are now com
ing together in one place for convenient
browsing!
—Minolta Reader Printer replaces a
17-year-old Kodak machine that no longer
is repaired by Kodak. The Minolta 605 uses
standard paper and dry copier chemicals,
zoom lens and motor drive for clearer,
cleaner microfilm copies. It makes white on
black or black on white paper copies.
Assistance from librarians is required
for use.
—Window film on the west windows, 3M
gradient densisty mylar film designed to cut
the heat penetration by 60%, cut glare by
57% and block all ultraviolet rays for
coolness and comfort in the library.
—New IBM series computer for public
use in Young People’s area.
—Coming attractions: Look for a new
system that will bring you current “hot”
books faster, and look for a new sign out
side the library to make the library’s loca
tion more visible.
Adult Programs
Programs in the library arefree, but reser
vations are requested.
Alaska
Thursday, June 28, 7:30p.m.
Keep cool with Anne and Charles
Vesely, world travelers, who present the
beauty of McKinley National Park. Eskimo
lore, glaciers, the pipeline and many
wonders of our 49th state. Their slide
presentation uses two projectors, a dissolve
unit, narration and music.
Coffee/Conversation/Book Discussion
Join New Reader Services Librarian
Martha Sloan two Thursday mornings for
informal discussion of “good reads”. This
will also be an opportunity for you to share
with others books you have enjoyed on a
special theme.
Thursday, July 12, 10:30 a.m.: Memoirs
of Childhood, books you’ve liked, ones
you’ve missed.
Thursday, August 2, 10:30 a.m.: On-theRoad Books of the 80’s: young and old
have now joined in the Huck Finn tradition;
let’s talk about it!
And The
Winners Are
As a National Library Week celebration,
the library sponsored a Reach for a Star
Contest, asking patrons to tell which books
made an impact on their lives. The votes are
in, as Deerfield Friends of the Library
members Cathy Chay, Lois Stransky, and
Jean Lucas judged the entries:
First prize: Children and Their Parents:
Toward Maturity, by Suzanne Fremon,
1968, submitted by Joan Freedman.
This book changed the kind of parent I
was and had lasting effects not only on me
but on my children. It helped me focus on
our main goal of fostering their positive
growth and development and our relation
ship with them....
99
Second prize: Remembrance of Things
Past, by Marcel Proust, submitted by June
Hamer.
“My favorite books are the seven
volumes of Remembrance...From this
work I have learned to love everyone and
see beauty everywhere. The writing is so
brilliant, exquisite, and refined that I am not
willing for a day to pass without dipping in
to one of these volumes. In time of crisis,
remembering the priorities...helped me
respond and brought us together in work
ing to solve each problem.

“I Can’t Find
That Book”
TRAVEL TOUR:
Historic Homes in Chicago
Saturday, July 28, 9:00 a.m.
An air conditioned deluxe motorcoach
will meet us at the door of the Deerfield
Library at 9:00 a.m. to explore early
residential areas and homes in the City of
Chicago. Included in the tour will be a visit
to the Henry B. Clarke House built in 1836;
it is restored to its original state and filled
with authentic objects from this time
period. In addition to a complete luncheon
at Le Loup, we will be touring landmark
neighborhoods with a number of architec
tural styles, and visit a charming liv
ing/studio/gallery space of one of the city’s
creative artists in Bucktown. We shall
return to the library at 2:45 p.m. Cost of the
tour is $39.50 per person, and this nonreftindable payment (to Deerfield Library)
is required before June 27. Come along!
(What happens when you lose your
library book, cassette, etc.)
If you lose an item, our goal is to recover
the original copy whenever possible,
because replacing materials can easily cost
the library almost twice the purchase price.
Why? Because replacement involves up
dating computer files, reordering and
recataloging the book, re-labeling it with
new pocket and cover, and preparing it for
circulation.
To cover these costs, many libraries
charge patrons large fines or a processing
fee in addition to the price of the book. Here
at Deerfield, we only charge the purchase
price, but we do wait two months for the
book to be found before billing you. Dur
ing this waiting period, circulation staff will
remind you about the missing book each
lime you use your library card—unless you
beat them to it by saying you found it!
Moral of this story—the book may be in
your car, or hidden behind the VCR—keep
searching!
Third prize: Profiles in Courage, by John
F. Kennedy, submitted by Howard Richter.
“A single line, ‘of course everyone is
familiar with the courage shown by John
Adams in his defense of the British soldic
in the Boston Massacre’ stumped m
history teacher, 2 librarians and a U. of
Penn, professor. It became the term paper
of this previously non motivated high
school student leading to my original
research in Boston and the National Ar
chives before I was 17, and later an M.A.
in history.
