"ITS A TRADITION"
During the month of Novem
ber, young people visiting the
Youth Services Department were
asked to tell us about some of
their holiday traditions. The re
sult is a booklet called It's a
Tradition, depicting the variety
of ways people in our commun
ity celebrate a favorite holiday.
Stop in the Youth Services De
partment and pick up your own
copy. Reading it is sure to give
you a lift on a wintery day.

The Youth Services Depart
ment has some interesting new
books for young readers. Among
them are The Beatles by Hunter
Davies. This is the second revised
edition of the original author
ized biography of the Beatles
and contains letters and illustra
tions never published before. A
Statue for America by Jonathon
Harris tells the history of Fran
ce's gift to the United States and
how Miss Liberty has been a part
of American life for the last 100
years. For all animal lovers,
James Herriot has given us a new
book that is a collection of his
favorite tales and experiences
with dogs as a country vet. It is

entitled James Herriot's Dog
Stories.
For very young readers, we
have new Early Readers. One of
our favorites is Peggy Parish's
new book Merry Christmas,
Amelia Bele/ia. Other new titles
include There's A Monster
Under My Bed by James Howe,
Crocodarling by Mary Rayner
and Maps and Globes by Jack
Knowlton ( Reading Rainbow
book). Check out the new book
cart for these new titles!

THINKING
OF THE HOLIDAYS
One of our new holi
day books is Christmas
Around the World and
it has information on the
_
music and carols of Christmas,
customs around the world,
crafts and cooking from many
countries, plus stories for the
whole family. The Sugar-Plum
Christmas Book by Jean Chap
man combines stories and crafts
for delightful reading. The
Christmas Spider by Loretta
Holz has directions for beautiful

I

crafts from Poland. To celebrate
Hanukkah we recommend The
Hanukkah Book by Mae Rock
land. It includes the origins of
this holiday along with chil
dren's crafts and games. Another
helpful book is Festivals for You
to Celebrate by Susan Purdy. A
Picture Book of Hanukkah by
David Adler is a good book to
read to preschoolers. Most of
these books can be found in the
394.2 section but look around
745.5 for materials on crafts.
Religious books will be 296.4.
Happy Holidays!

ADULT DEPARTMENT
FOREIGN POLICY DECISIONS
PAPERBACK NEWS
For those young readers who
like paperbacks, we have a fine
selection from which to choose.
Some of our new titles are The
Mick—An American Hero: The
Legend and The Glory by Mick
ey Mantle, The Adventures of a
Two-Minute Werewolf by Gene
DeWeese, and Angie's First Case
by Donald Sobol. Other popular
books now in paperback are Re
membering the Good Times by
Richard Peck, Sherlock Holmes
— Through Time and Space
edited by Isaac Asimov and Seth
McEvoy's series about a teenage
robot called Not Quite Human
(books 1 through 4).
Many of our young readers
are finding the "Solve It Your
self Computer Mysteries" fun to
read and program as well. The
Byte Brothers by Lois and Floyd
McCoy invites the reader to help
crack a case by using a universal
microcomputer language on
their home or school computer
while reading the book.

February and March will
again be "Great Decisions" time
at the library. This will be the
ninth year we have participated
in the largest nonpartisan foreign
policy education program in the
U.S.. Our discussion group will
meet on Tuesday evenings at
7:30 PM each week beginning
February 10th through April
7th.
Join the 250,000 fellow cit
izens who will study and discuss
these topics:
1) The Constitution and For
eign Policy: The Role of Law in
International Relations
2) Defense and the Federal
Deficit: U.S. Needs, Soviet
Challenges
3) Egypt and the U.S.: Un
easy Relations
4) The Pacific Basin: Alli
ances, Trade and Bases
5) South Africa: Apartheid

Under Siege
6) Foreign Investment in the
U.S.: The Selling of America?
7) Pakistan and Afghanistan:
Storm Over Southeast Asia
8) Dealing with Revolution:
Iran, Nicaragua and the Philip
pines
We will read the non-partisan,
non-political Foreign Policy
Association briefing booklet for
in-depth background. Then after
our weekly discussion, we reg
ister our views on the opinion
ballots. They will be tabulated,
along with more than 61,000
others, and sent to the President,
Congress, Departments of State
and Defense, and the national
media.
Make your opinion count!
Register at the library, buy your
$7.00 briefing book, and join us
on February 10th.

OUTPUT
MEASURE SURVEYDPL GETS HIGH MARKS
In the February/April issue of
our newsletter, we reminded and
thanked our patrons for helping
us in our Output Measures Sur
vey in which we computed for
n n
Fill rate" for refer"fill rates,
ence is defined in terms of the
number of reference transactions
completed in proportion to the
total number of reference trans
actions. For author/subject,
title, and browsing, it is defined
in terms of the number of items
found in proportion to the num
ber of items sought.
The results of our survey and
those completed by 37 other
North Suburban Library System
public libraries were compiled
and here is how we fared:
Reference: Number 1
96.00% (Ave.-75.41%)
Title: Number 1
81.60% (Ave.-66.52%)
Author/Subject: Top 18%
82.50%
Browsing: 3.05% above average
95.20%
Again, we thank all of those
patrons who took the time to
help us with the survey.

PHONOLOG/
LIST-O-TAPES
Have you ever needed to find
the performer of a particular
song or the name of the album
or tape in which the song
appears? Deerfield Public
Library has useful sources to
help you find music-related in
formation. Phonolog is a looseleaf, subscription service which
gives information on songs (com
poser/artist/label/album number
/album the song appears on),
artists (albums/singles), and
albums (artist/label/album number/songs). List-O-Tapes has the
same information for tapes
(cassette/8-track/reel-to-reel).
The main body of these
works consists of pop titles, pop
artists, and pop albums or tapes.

"Pop" includes rock, country, R
& B, soul, and jazz. There are sep
arate sections for band, Christ
mas, children's, sacred, Hawaii
an, classical, and other categories
of music. There is also an alpha
betically arranged list of record/
tape companies in the front of
the work.
Phonolog and List-O-Tapes
are located on top of our vertical
file.

TAX ASSISTANCE
Free tax assistance will again
be offered by trained graduates
of A. A. R.P.'s VITA program.
Beginning February 6th from
1-4 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays
the volunteers will be in the
Eleanor Dawe Room. They will
take appointments through April
14th.

SHERLOCK HOLMES
A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
1987 marks the 100th year
since the publication of Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study
in Scarlet with the first appear
ance of the world's greatest
detective, Sherlock Holmes. We
have chosen to make National
Library Week (April 4-11) a
glorious celebration of this event
and we invite you to attend.

A DELICIOUS BEGINNING
On Saturday, April 4th at
8:30 a.m. the festivities begin
with a breakfast served in the
library gallery which will be
appropriately decorated for the
occasion. With an 87-cent ticket
(available in advance at the cir
culation desk) anyone may en
joy an English breakfast and stay
to hear North Shore expert. Bob
Mangier, on the subject "Sher
lock Holmes: Fact or Fiction;".
Mr. Mangier has spoken recently
at Northern Illinois University
and at the Newberry Library in
Chicago, and is well known to
Chicago-area Sherlockians.
We will distribute a takehome mystery quiz at the break
fast and those who wish to
participate may compete for
prizes to be awarded at our
Grand Finale English Tea.

Liebow wrote a book with that
title (it is in the library collec

our special event.

War II, blotters, and postcards
for the entire world. This collec
tion contains (in the postcard
section alone) 1 million unique
views, and is a major resource of
historical significance covering
the years 1898 to 1974. Most of
the original artwork that went
into the production, including
negatives, paste-ups, client let
ters, etc. were saved and are part
of this impressive collection. It is
now being cataloged with com
puter cross-references and is
used by authors, film companies,
business, and historians.

Ms. Hamilton-Smith, archivist
and lecturer, has advanced de
grees in Art History from the
University of Chicago and St.
Andrews University, Scotland,
and her experience includes
work in several archives and gal
leries. She will tailor her talk to

emphasize Deerfield and the sur
rounding area as she brings a
sampling of North Shore views
from the postcard collection.
Our program is scheduled for
the week before the longawaited permanent exhibit
opens at the Lake County Muse
um in Wauconda. We hope you
will take advantage of this
opportunity to hear our talk,
then take the family out to the
Lakewood Forest Preserve to en
joy its country surroundings.

ART THERAPY Tuesday,
September 22nd at 7:30 pm
This Fall our Adult
Programming begins with a slide
talk by Mildred Chapin, trained
art therapist, who has a Master's
Degree in Education. In
"Therapy Through Art," she will
talk about her experiences with
clients both in groups and
individually. Ms. Chapin works
with children, adolescents,
adults, and families in this
interesting field in which
psychotherapists are harnessing
art's universal language to better
diagnose and treat the disturbed.
Communicating by non-verbal
expression provides a means of
reconciling emotional conflicts
and fostering self-awareness and
growth. Join us as she illustrates
the theory.
LIVING WITH YOUR 3 TO 5
WHAT'S
YEAR OLD
NORMAL? Tuesday, October
6th at 7:30 pm
The popular child and adult
therapist, Susan Sack, returns
with her program for mothers
and fathers of pre-schoolers.
This popular talk has been
presented for several years to
enthusiastic parents who have
the opportunity to ask questions
during the discussion period. Ms.
Sack is an accredited member of
ACSW and has a private practice
in Northbrook.
NATIONAL ISSUES FORUMWHAT IS IT?
NIF is a non-partisan coalition
working to provide an
opportunity for citizens to
educate themselves on important
issues and have their views heard
in the policy making process.
Americans have gathered in their
communities across the nation
each Fall since 1982 to discuss
three public issues of national
concern. The reading materials,
which all participants study, are
rigorously non-partisan.

Fall 1987 Adult Programs
SELECTING THE RIGHT
HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN
Wednesday, October 7th at 7:30
pm
Citizens are being flooded
with confusing mail soliciting
enrollment in accident
insurance, hospital plans.
Medicare supplement plans,
catastrophic medical insurance
plans, and many other varieties
of health plans. They are turning
on their televisions to view
health insurance advertising
which implies financial disaster.
They are even receiving
information from their current
health insurance carriers
suggesting that they convert to a
better plan and/or subscribe to
additional plans.
Medical problems are
commonplace particularly in the
"golden years" and medical
costs are indeed costly. Having
proper coverage is important.
Everyone wants "adequate"
coverage but few really
understand what is needed or
even what is covered. Because of
this lack of understanding and
fear of financial doom, many
individuals purchase too much
developed to show all sides and
to help clarify the policy
choices. Local forums all address
the same three domestic issues, a
coordination that makes the
results of great interest to policy
makers.
This year the topics are:
1. Freedom of Speech- Where
to Draw the Line
2. The Superpowers- Nuclear
Weapons and National
Security
3. The Trade Gap- Regaining
the Competitive Edge
Non-partisan sessions
encourage airing all sides of an

insurance or inadequate plans.
Information and issues involved
in this decision-making process
of "Selecting the Right Health
Insu ranee Plan r • will be
addressed by Carolyn Shear.
Carolyn Shear earned her B.S.
and M.S.W. degrees at the
University of Illinois. She was an
instructor of Social Work in The
College of Medicine at the
University of Illinois and a
medical social worker at the
University of Illinois Research
and Educational Hospital. She
was medical assistant and
secretary to the Chairman of the
Department of Orthopedics,
Northwestern University. Three
years ago she started a health
insurance service providing
clients with complete
management of medical bills and
insurance claims. Her extensive
experience has given her insights
as to individual needs and health
insurance plans. She does not
sell insurance or have any
affiliation with any insurance
company or insurance broker.
issue and work toward some
common understandings. Those
of you who have participated in
our "Great Decisions" program,
will see the similarity but
whereas "Great Decisions" deals
with foreign policy, the thrust in
Ii
National Issues Forum" is
toward domestic problems (For
example, last year the topics
were "Crime," "The Farm
Problem," and "Immigration").
If you would like to join a
National Issues Study Circle,
please call Peggy McCabe, Adult
Services Librarian, to express
your interest. With enough
responses, we'll plan an evening
time to meet.

Vol.2 No. 3
COURTAULD ART PREVIEW IS DECEMBER 7
As a special holiday treat, the
Deerfield Public Library will
present a preview slide/lecture
showing of the Impressionist and
Post-Impressionist Masterpieces:
The Courtauld Collection. The
presentation will begin at 7:30
p.m. Monday, December 7 in the
Eleanore T. Dawe Room.

Through the eyes of the artists,
Lee Gibbs will present many
views of 19th century French
life with a humanistic as well as
artistic approach. The artists
specialized in animation and
flux, illuminating shadows,
heightening colors and catching
the moment. Their brushstrokes
became mist, sparkle, shimmer
and brightness.

The collection, one of the
world’s most outstanding, is on
special loan until Jan. 3 to the
Art Institute of Chicago, from
the University of London’s
Courtauld Institute. It contains
many of the most important
French paintings of the period
from 1870 to 1910. The 48
selected paintings on view
include best known and beloved
works by Manet, Degas, Monet,
Renoir, Cezanne, Seurat,
VanGogh, Gauguin, and
Toulouse Lautrec among many
others.

Lee Gibbs, guest lecturer, is a
world traveled lecturer and
photographer and contains an
enthusiasm for her subject that
has gained her a sple.ndid
reputation in the Chicago area.
This event is free and open to
the public, but reservations are
requested. To reserve space,
please notify the Circulation
Desk, 945-3311.

LIBRARY/SCHOOL COOPERATION
IS WINNING IDEA
Jack Hicks, Head of the
Reference Dept., Deerfield
Public Library, and Gerri
Spinella, Language Arts teacher
at Wilmot Junior High, District
109, co-present a program at this
years’ Midwest Federation of
Library Associations Convention
in Indianapolis. Their program,
Library Instruction for Junior
High Students, was selected as a
unique example of cooperation
between two diverse community
organizations.

For the past seven years
Deerfield Public Library and
Wilmot Jr. High have conducted
a joint research skills program.
What started out on a casual
basis has grown into a significant
learning experience for the 8th
Grade students from Wilmot Jr.
High. Librarians and teachers
alike are enthusiastic about the
success of the project, which in
the past year was nominated as a
“Winning Curriculum Idea” by
the National Association of
Professional Educators.

Students are instructed in the
use of library reference
materials, the research process,
and the compiling of
bibliographies. The goal of the
projects is to increase the
students’ library skills, assure
success instead of frustration
when the student confronts
research for the first time,
demystify the library, and make
the students feel that library
research is within their
capabilities.

MONDAY, JANUARY 11 CHOICES FOR A RICHER
LIFE
“It’s great to have a genie to

better to be your own genie;get
rid of the indecision, doubt and
fear. A richer life is a state of
mind’’ says Linda Fallucca,
Ph.D. Her 23 years as a
psychotherapist with intuitive
abilities will bring a unique

use our own intuition to make
posi tive* choices. We CAN
control our thoughts, attitudes,
actions and beliefs to choose a
richer life.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20 “NIPS, TUCKS AND YOU”
If the January blahs lead you to
begin thinking about tummy
tucks, face lifts, or other ways to
look and feel better, Cosmetic
Surgeon Steven Bloch of
Highland Park Hospital will offer
some of the pros and cons at this
evening meeting. Come take a
peek at some before and after
photos, and consider the

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 I THOUGHT MY TAXES WERE
GOING DOWN! WHAT CAN I
DO NOW?
Just named by Money Magazine
as one of America’s best tax
practitioners, Gary S. Hart, a
Deerfield resident, offers the
inside information on preparing
1987 tax returns and planning

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 23 NEPAL ADVENTURE
Trekking season is almost upon
us and before guide Jim
Crosswhite leaves for Nepal he
visits Deerfield to take us on an
“armchair” ride to Nepal in the
Himalayas to trek the highest
mountain on Earth. Crosswhite
has trekked for months in Nepal,
rafted its rivers, and tracked
rhino on foot all within the
shadow of Mt. Everest. You’ll
view it all here in the library.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE
LIBRARIAN......
Noreen Curulewski had been
here almost twenty years as
Head of Circulation when she
retired in September to a new
home in California with her
husband Frank.
Always optimistic and cheerful,
she was liked by staff and
patrons alike. She was here when
I came. Together we experienced
a referendum, a building
program, a move, expansion, and
the introduction of automation - - and those are just the
highlights!
She inspired great loyalty on the
part of her staff, and always gave
one hundred percent of herself
to whatever needed to be done.
We wish her the best of
everything and hope that she’ll
keep us posted on what’s going
on in her new life.

WHAT DR. RUTH FORGOT
TO TELL YOU: THE FACTS
On Tuesday, December 1,
Highland Park Hospital
obstetrician-gynecologist Doctor
Michael Benson will give a talk
at the library on basic sex facts.
He will review fertility,
contraception, sexually
transmitted diseases, and sexual
behavior. Dr. Benson says that
most adults in the United States
do not know the fertile time in a
woman’s menstrual cycle.
Sexually transmitted diseases are
becoming epidemic and teen
pregnancy rate in this country is
the highest in the developed
world. Despite all of the media
exposure, there are still
misunderstandings. A question
and answer session follows his
presentation which is open to
the public and begins at 7:30
p.m.
